The Royal Maanenic Maritime Defence Force is the senior service of the Grand Duchy , it's current responsiblities are the defence from naval attack of the Maanenland mainland from the sea. It's other responsiblities are to protect offshore oil installations , protect fisheries vessels and most importantly to defend ships of the Merchant Navy of Maanenland.

History

Even though Maanenland is not an island it's senior and most important service is it's navy. The economy of the nation and it's other interests lie offshore from the nation. Rather than trading with it's economically poor neighbours Maanenland has always traded with the richest nations overseas to the point that over three quaters of the countrys exports and imports leave via the sea.

When the first civilisations sprung up in Maanenland they tended to be along the main rivers , the arteries of ancient Maanenland. These civilisations thus created fleets of small trading vessels to trade their wares. Rival factions began to attack these vessels and so the response was to create fighting vessels. Before unification most territories had some form of naval fleet. Following unifcation they were incorporated under the new crown of Maanenland as the Royal Maanenland Navy.

As the power of the nation grew and trade links began to spring up internationally it became more and more important to defend the nations merchant fleet from attacks from pirates or rival nations. So in 1342 the order went out to bolster the power of the navy by 100 ships creating one the regions most powerful naval force.

During the civil war the naval fleet under the control of crown of Maanenland went to the assistance of the ports of Kingsborough which were by far the nations largest at the time. The portlands of Newport had their own defence force and had always refused the juristication of the crown naval fleet. So in 1443 the navy launched an amphibious assault on the province from Dukesport over the Ternpool channel and into the Portlands. The small navies of the north were quickly overwhelmed and captured for the Duchy naval fleet.

Following the civil war , with the nation still without a proper power base , the navy fell into disrepair with many ships renting out their services to traders to protect their vessells when on the high seas.

From the 1600s to the present day there has been relative peace in the nation with only minor skirmishes internationally as the nation adopted a more insular approach. The navy continued it's role in defending merchant shipping across the world and fought activley against slavery and piracy world wide.

With this peace and security the navy set about exploring new trade routes finding many new civilisations each with new goods to trade with the motherland, the navy also began charting the seas producing world famous maps and the Nautical Traders Almanac in 1614 which provided news and information for sailors internationally. It is still published today by the naval fleet annually. In modern times it prints it's information service on a real-time basis over the internet and radio and still provides an invaluable tool for sailors internationally.

In the 1850s the power of the navy began to slide as new more advanced hull building techniques and propulsion systems began to take off both in the region and in the navies of Maanenlands economic rivals. The nation at the time also had begun to decline somewhat economically and so the government of William Witherstone ordered a sell-off of the majority of the fleet to pay for new more modern vessels but with much reduced numbers.

In 1923 the Maanenic vessel MMV Enterprise was in a convoy of 12 ships delivering industrial parts overseas was sunk 231nm off the Maanenland coast by pirates, despite issuing a mayday call the underfunded and undermanned naval fleet didn't respond to the disaster until two days later and didn't reach the site until four days afterwards. An admiralty enquiry revealed a decayed fleet with poor management and substandard training techniques. There was shock waves throughout the nation after the attack and forced the government to act fully reforming the service and increasing it's funding. These improvements were short lived and only fixed the problem while it was at national attention. 12 years later in 1935 a passenger ship was captured and forced to dock at one of Maanenland's rival shipyards , two days later several other cargo ships were also impounded and their cargo taken off them. Although a naval fleet was dispatched and protests made to the prime minister of the5 other nation the goods were not handed back. As the ships were captured in a channel where 40% of Maanenlands cargo goes through the navy set sail to attempt to clear the channel which was technically in international waters. A small naval battle in the channel left the Maanenland fleet severly wounded and limping back to Dukesport embarassed and with their tails between their legs. Although war was not declared by either side it was still the nations greatest military loss in combat with 24 destroyers either severly damaged or sunk. The other nation agreed to return the property to Maanenland following international condemnation but it is widely believed that if the situation would of detrioriated futher then it is probable that the entire naval fleet could be destroyed by a nation considered a third-rate military power with a much smaller population and economy than Maanenland.

With the Enterprise affair still in the public consciousness the public demanded action. The 1924 general election saw a massive defeat for the Labour Party who was in power during both events. The National Conservative Party (the forerunners of Maanenland First) were elected on a program of massive investment in the navy. By 1946 Maanenland again had one of the most powerful naval fleets in the modern region.

The 1977 Defence Re-Organisation saw a new overhaul of the navy. The first major change was a cosmetic one. The Royal Maanenland Navy changed it's name to the Royal Maanenic Maritime Defence Force to reflect it's changing structure from an offensive seaborne platform to a maritime force designed primarilly for the defence of Maanenlands maritime strategic interests. The switch met a lot of critisism from the press and public alike who saw it as abandoning a piece of history as the previous name had existed for 910 years.

In the 1990s massive investment was poured in to bolstering the fleet even more and adding the capability for arming submarines with nuclear missiles as the first fleet of SSBNs all being comissioned in the summer of 1996 (the program was delayed by two years due to industrial action). In the 21st century the navy is the most powerful and versitatile that it has ever been and conducts operations in nearly every important waterway in the world. The present administration has vowed to invest even more into the naval fleet announcing plans to start research on replacing the entire fleet with a new ultramodern integerated digital seaborne warfare system. Plans are also starting to be drawn up for the fleets 1000th anniversary in 2050.

Organisation

The Royal Maanenic Maritime Defence Force is established by the royal perogative. Despite this the Lord High Admiral of the Maanenland fleet is the Lord Lieutenant Alexander Jameson. All naval officers who become Lord Lieutenant by custom always take the title. The staff of the force still pledge their allegiance to it's usual commander-in-chief the Duke of Cliffton.

The force is run under the stewardship of the Lord Marshal of Territorial Integrity (currently Paul Simon who takes the joint title of Lord Admiral and the Lord Marshal of Commerce (currently James Walsh. The service is adminstered by the Supreme Naval Security Council of the Maanenic Admirality. The services professional head is Admiral Jason Learson.
