The Royal Maanenland Army is the land armed forces branch of the Maanenic Armed Forces. The Maanenic Army is principally a ground defence force for defending the homeland and is a regional leader in guerilla warfare and defending ground. The modern Maanenic Army is the weakest and least funded of all the military branches and lacks a strong offensive power unit.

History

Foundation

The first Maanenic army was raised in 1110 to fight regional conflicts intra-kerkby and was a small force consisting of troops from the various fiefdoms across the Kingdom. When not in conflict the majority of the army would carry on with other work in the various fiefdoms until the next conflict arose.

Civil War

Prior to the civil war the Kingdom was on a peace footing and the majority of the union army were busy with their day to day tasks. Although there was a great deal of tension at the time no-one expected the sneak attack by southern forces that came in 1422. The beheading of William IV of Maanenland in the winter of that year plunged the army into crisis. With no national leader the individual Dukedoms and fifes had full control of their own armed forces thus sparking the civil war.

Reconstruction

With no standing army of the union left (units had declared their support for their dukes only) the Duke of Cliffton , the Grand Duke of Maanenland , faced a dilemma on how to keep his new territory safe. He could not defend the vast landscape with the armies simply from his duchy and so in Lieutenancy Decreement 4 he ordered the raising of an army , not based on the previous feudal system , but an army similiar to most modern armies today.

Imperial Conquests

From the 1600s onwards Maanenland was rebuilding itself as a regional power and fought several conflicts with it's neighbours including the Wars of the Mountains 1643 and Maanenland-Wilnwick War of 1667 which , although did not gain the Duchy much ground , destroyed much of the opposition by neighbouring nations giving a greater sense of security in the nation.

1732 saw the climax of Maanenic military power when the [[[Kingdom of Calder | Calder]] was overwhelmed by the army and allowed for a quick annexation of the land giving the nation a greater buffer between itself and it's neighbours.

19th Century

After the annexation of Calder the persistant battles with the neighbours had ceased as the other nations could not afford and did not have the power to fight back against Maanenland which had seen the army grown and grown.

Advances in rifle technology were quickly sought by the army , however the cost of updating the army was far too great and the strength of the army was cut drastically concentrating on skill rather than sheer force. Many of the historic regiments of indiviudal duchies were also axed as the government sought to pump it's money into the dominance of the seas.

20th Century

At the start of the 20th century the Maanenic Army was a shadow of it's former self and could not respond adequatly resulting in several key military embarassments overseas including the disastarous Prelin Expedition and the ill-fated attempt in 1943 from stopping Caberland turning communist.

Advances in tank technology were also slow to catch on and were not introduced until the late 1950s following the Maanenic Strategic Defence Review 1958;

Review and Rebuild

The result of the year long comission studying the armed forces resulted in the biggest shake-up in it's somewhat uneventful history.

Military planners for the first time had created a single doctrine of a strategy for the armed forces which saw it change from a small group of expeditionaries into a fully fledged fighting force. Advanced tanks and ground missile defence systems were heavily invested in as was promoting greater liason with the other forces who had previously little contact with each other.

The new plan for the force was that it was to be used to defend the homeland only and that that is what it should specialise in. The report concluded that the army must : 'defend every last inch of land of the duchy to destroy the morale of our enemies'.

For the first time a new volunteer army was greated , the Maanenland Territorial Army to provide support to the existing forces , national service was also introduced in 1960 whereby all young males were trained for combat should war ever break out in Maanenland.

21st Century

In the 21st century the army has evolved into a highly effective ground defence force suplimented with investment in equipment and infastructure. Although numerically smaller than at any time of it's history it is at by far it's strongest ever in the nations history. Although it has no commitments overseas and rarely gets involved in overseas affairs it it still ready and able to fight at any point on the globe at any given time. The main emphasis however it still on protecting the homeland at any cost.
