The Síanach-class nuclear-powered guided missile destroyer (DDGN) emerged from the Royal Shipyards of Isselmere-Nieland in late-2006 to compliment the Wallace-class — at the time, a one-to-one replacement was not feasible — to counter the large, cruiser-sized destroyers of many other navies. The designers armed the new destroyers with a cruiser-style gun armament of four single-mount 203 mm (eight-inch) electro-thermal chemical (ETC) guns and equipped it with heavy GWLS.58M2 vertical launching system (VLS) modules unlike the general purpose VLS-modules of earlier designs.

The Royal Isselmere-Nieland Navy began slowly replacing older ships of the Wallace-class in 2006. Just over half of the earlier class was mothballed by mid-2007, with the remainder following by autumn 2007.
