Sam I Am was born in the major city of Showroomtown, HotRodia, to the very wealthy I Am family, owners of the I Am Tired Mattress Manufacturies corporation, which has under his management has expanded to providing many HotRodians with all sorts of bedroom furniture and linens, not just mattresses. His family is small consisting of himself and his parents, who passed on a few years ago. He has no children, and it remains to be seen if he ever will.

His education was excellent, partially as a result of his natural inquisitiveness and talents, but also due to his family's wealth. They paid for him to attend several of the most expensive private universities in HotRodia, where he earned degrees in several fields of study, and worked through a few internships that gave him valuable practical experiences in teamwork, public relations, and management.
