San Fredlando is a famous and proud nation, historically known as a tightly-packed city-state that existed inside the country of Zedoljev. Its history began in 1080 CE (STS) where during the Second Zedoljan Civil War, Royal Prince Fredric, Duke of Dneptravosk, declared himself and his city independent of his father, King Rikat II, who was battling against a rebellion to oust him from power. Rikat successfully managed to regain control of Zedoljev after a brief exile and marched to Dneptravosk to demand his son's surrender. When his son refused, he left a large part of his army to lay siege to the city. Fredric managed to provoke the Royalists into assaulting the city by capturing the forces' Captain in a daring night raid. Dneptravosk's defenders prevailed and after dealing a decisive blow to Rikat, both militarily and personally, they were allowed the foothold they needed to establish an independent state. Fredric threw out many Zedoljan influences, and culturally became remarkably different, adopting a foreign language - Fennian - to use instead of Zlevic. Thus started nearly a thousand years of a world famous principality, which ended in 2043, when the last Prince died without leaving an heir, and the country became a Republic.

Despite its small size, San Fredlando is famous for its religious significance, as it was a spiritual centre of the Reformed Church of the Goddess, with pilgrims from across the world travelling to the city to visit the famous Shrine of Our Lady built in the 19th Century. San Fredlando is also renowned for the work of revolutionary scientist Jean Christophe Borg, who, while not a native, was living in the city at the time when poorly made pipes allowed nuclear waste from the power station at Fochnya in Zedoljev (ironically built to serve San Fredlando) to seep into the city's underground, where many hundreds of people were trying to live in any space they could find. His work, which was to cybernetically "mend" children either struck down by radiation sickness, or mutated at birth. This coined a new breed of people, called "Borg-Children". The city's irradiated underground also gave birth (according to legend) to a group of Cyclopes, in the image of the Goddess Leila - herself a Cyclops of ancient times. These quickly became two things that made the city famous.

For the vast majority of its history, San Fredlando has only existed in its small state, but improving relations with Zedoljev allowed San Fredlando to benefit from slightly more breathing room, and, with the establishment of the PEEL Colonial Territories, a place for many Fredlandians to escape the crowded city and experience an open countryside to live in for probably the first time in the history of the country. However, in the 2040s, San Fredlando's territorial occupation in the Gnome Islands backfired in a series of uprisings that led to the Gnome Islands Conflict in 2045. It was during this conflict that terrorists set off a nuclear device in the City which destroyed or damaged 89% of the city's buildings and caused the death of 26 million people. The only consolation was that much of the city's huge population had moved the colonies. The survivors have returned to rebuild their city and to keep the country's culture alive.

The identity of the country has undoubtedly waned since the war however. In 2048, San Fredlando became part of the Union of Soviet Tschazanovite Republics and has as such been eclipsed by Zedoljev, slowly rebuilding while being a mere shadow of its former magnificence.
