Location

Sassafras is a small tree village in the Shining district in north of the Errinundera Plateau. It is home to meandering creeks and the most beautiful southern sassafras forest in the nation. The flower of the southern sassafras is displayed on the flag. As its name suggests, the village is located on a broad shallow gully. The giant eucalypts that house the villagers grow along the curving ridge-line around the gully.

Sacred Tree

The sacred tree is OSCHATU. Unlike other Plateau villages this tree is southern sassafras (Atherosperma moschatum) rather than the usual eucalypt. This tree may only be about 27 metres tall but it is ancient, estimated to be 1,600 years old, and is covered in moss, ferns and climbers.
