Nomenclature

In ancient times, the region of Thorin was controlled by the Lugonomeks, an indigenous race of people who believed is many gods and goddesses. One of these goddesses was Sonia, who was the spirit of the sea. Therefore, the word for "sea" in Lugonomekan was Sonia, which was the only name the Lugonomeks had for the body of water.

When the Thornichi arrived in Thorin, they learned the word from the Lugonomeks. However, due to the Lugonomekan accent, the Thornichi misheard the word as "Shoma" (The Lugonomekan language has one sound audibly between "m" and "n" as opposed to separate sounds, and the "s" sound tends to be pronounced like "sh"). The word was used henceforth as the name of the sea. However, due to the fact that the word is borrowed from another language, the words "the Sea of" are added on to Shoma, which repetitively would literally mean "The Sea of The Sea".

Properties

The sea of Shoma is cooled from the north, where wind blows across the mountains and icy northern regions of Thorin, and warmed by sub-tropical sun in the southern portion. Cold depths are interspersed with underwater volcanic vents. This mixing of warm and cold water results in many storms and thick fog, especially in the center of the sea. Between the storms and fog, which often limits visibility to less than half a foot when approaching the center of the sea, few ships, planes, or even satellites have gazed upon the center of the water mass. Submersible ships are endangered by extreme underwater currents and whirlpools.

The sea is, disputably, the largest body of fresh water on the planet. High yields of fish once were a great bounty for Thorin, but overfishing and pollution have seriously impacted wildlife.
