The Seneschal of the Despotic Court of New Constantinople is a noble officer of the Despotic Court of New Constantinople is in charge of the household, residence, and staff employed at the court - in effect he is the chief executive officer of the palace, which employs hundreds of full-time personnel and many thousands of people on a more casual basis. The position is appointed by the Emperor, and is largely a ceremonial one, typically given to older men of the upper echelons of Pantocratoria's nobility who are personally close to the Imperial Family. It is considered a mark of great favour by the Emperor to be made Seneschal of the Despotic Court, and is regarded as the highest honour obtainable by a member of the nobility, short of marriage into the Imperial Family itself. The actual day-to-day management of the Despot's palace is generally left to staff answerable to the seneschal, whose real (although not technical) responsibility is to counsel, tutor, and otherwise look to the personal development of the Despot of New Constantinople. With the position goes a generous salary and sumptuous apartments at the Despotic Court, where the seneschal resides. The present Seneschal of the Despotic Court is Duc Mathieu d'Adrienople.
