Sentry Island

Sentry Island, better known to locals as Analia, is a large island that sits astride the passage between the Western Marches and Troobodia Bay. A surprisingly advanced civilization flourished in Analia more than two thousand years ago, while Shieldians were still organized in primitive, clan-based erarde. The Sentrian Empire, as it is known today in Iansisle, projected its power into the virgin oak forests of the Shield and as far as the borders of Dianatran.

Today, the largest city on Sentry Island is Harbor City, a banally-named colonial port founded by an ill-fated Wyclyfian expedition. Although the Sentry Company of Wyclyfe ended up going bust, a later Shadoranite expedition ended up establishing a permanent Shieldian presence as early as 1661. The island has been under Shieldian control ever since, as Shadoran turned into the Grand Empire turned into the Gull Flag Republic.

Sentry Island is bounded on the north by the Weshield Strait, a broad, shallow, slow-moving expanse of water that flows from the Western Marches to Troobodia Bay, and on the south by the Skull, a quick, deep, narrow passage that flows from the Bay into the Marches. The terrain is largely mountainous and the coastline is marked by large, deep natural harbors. Sentry Island is twenty miles wide at its largest point and measures thirty-seven miles from Cape Duria in the north to Cape MacMillan in the south.

Under the Old Regime, Sentry Island was held as a quasi-independent archduchy. The Archduke of Sentry Island was nominally the heir to the defunct Sentrian Empire, although he was in actuality bound like the six Kings of the Shield to the High King in Ianapalis. However, after the Archduke of Sentry Island attempted to assassinate High King James III, the title was officially stripped from the D’Analia family and assumed by the throne. Under the Republic, Sentry Island is divided into three of the two hundred and twenty five electoral districts.

Sentrians tend to be a little darker than Shieldians and are usually characterized as having olive features and dark hair. Although Nicodemo Ranalte is actually an ethnic Sentrian, that background has not stopped him from rising to be the President of the Gull Flag Republic.
