The Separatist War was a war during which Kajal Mars seceeded from the then-Imperium of Kajal, and came under attack and occupation by Kajali forces in two major invasions and multiple smaller engagements within the course of two Kajali years. It is commonly referred to as "The Separatist Years" by the majority of the population of Kajal Mars.

Secession

The Battle of the Capitol

The secession of Kajal Mars from the Imperium of Kajal was originally spurred by the ever increasing amount of taxes and trade revenues appropriated from the colony by the Imperium from 48BDE to 34BDE. Coupled with a ludicrously high tax rate, the prospect of independance as a mode of escaping the exploitation of the Imperium was quite attractive to the population. The colony officially seceeded from the Imperium on Kel-Sansu Ilaan, 3BDE (Approximately the 15th of September - the Kajali calendar does not match those of Earth well).

Within a month, the colony had all but descended into chaos, as Imperialist forces clashed with the Separatists within the colony. The Separatist Years began in earnest with the arrival of a mid-size Kajali fleet over Kajal Mars. The Kajali fleet was frank with the other nations of Mars, stating that it had been dispatched to quell an insurgency in the colony, but the Imperialists dealt themselves a serious blow when the mining array of Asgard Station, still active at the time, was used to strike against the colony. The attack destroyed a signifigant portion of the Capitol Dome, and the majority of the combatants in that theatre were either Kajali or forced to wear breathing equipment - the larger and more efficient lungs of the Kajali allowed them to breathe the atmosphere at the time, though it was unpleasant and not recommended.

The initial three month engagement ended when Separatist forces were able to force the Imperialists out of the Capitol region, with the assistance of peacekeepers from Auman and other martian nations. As the Capitol Dome was effectively at the center of the local maglev network, it allowed the Separatist forces to control much of the nation. The Imperium of Kajal removed several devices from the Capitol region as a condition of the cease fire, though fighting between the two groups continued in various domes across the countries regardless of the truce. As a condition of the cease-fire, the Separatists, lead by Derin Kavar and the Duchess Keral demanded that the Imperium recognize Kajal Mars as a sovereign and separate nation, which the Imperium did begrudgingly.

The Urban War

While a treaty had officially been signed, the fighting in more isolated domes, such as those that had found themselves upon seabed after the terraforming of Mars had progressed significantly, continued. The underwater dome of Ljosaa saw heavy fighting between the two sides continue into a stalemate, destroying much of the dome's lower levels of city, and damaging sections of the more expensive upper levels. Ljosaa had been isolated from the rest of the country at the time, due to Imperialist control of the maglev terminal to the Capitol dome. Eventually, word of the fighting within Ljosaa got out, and the Imperialists began launching further guerilla attacks in vulnerable domes, and the cease fire was broken.

The Imperium of Kajal did not send further forces to bolster the Imperialists, though it did retain control of the waygate over Kajal Mars. Even with the assistance of sympathetic nations, the Separatists were evenly matched with the Imperialist forces, and while they managed to retain control for the most part, Kajal Mars itself was effectively contested by the two groups. The stalemate continued for two Kajali years, with the Separatists acknowledged as the ruling government of the country. In a period of relative calm, Kajal Mars participated in Operation: Roundhammer, though Imperialist attacks resumed once more several months afterwards.

The Attack on Mars

Having tired of months of briefings that reported no effectual gains in territory in Kajal Mars, the Imperium of Kajal intervened once more, choosing to send a fleet to attack Kajal Mars directly. The fleet had been authorized to use force against any opposition they would encounter, and instead of using the waygate, which was largely believed to be heavily blockaded, the fleet was deployed using the first Subspace Launcher, a massive construct designed on the principles of the waygate, but not requiring a recieving ring. At the time, it was much faster than the Kajali drives, though it is largely unused as recent developments in drive technology have rendered it superfluous.

The passage of the Kajali fleet through subspace was detected while the fleet was nearly three days out from Mars, as the energy expended to fling the fleet through subspace was so great that it intruded into the spatial realm in the form of radio emissions. The first documented detection of a subspace waveform, it was an inexcusable flaw in the Imperial plan of attack; choosing speed of transit over tactical advantage allowed the various nations of Mars to calculate the Imperial fleet's vector and exit point, and set up a minefield at the exit point. When the fleet unexpectedly increased its speed, the exit point changed, and the first item to exit transit was a high yield subspace bomb. It had been launched when the mass signature of the minefield was detected in transit, and succeeded only in destroying the inner core of the minefield. At the same time, coordinated efforts by Imperialist forces within Kajal Mars began attacking government and military institutions within the larger domes in Kajal Mars. The fleet attack, while vicious, failed utterly in the face of superior forces. However, the primary objective was believed achieved; the assassination of the majority of the Kajal Mars Senate and Parliament occured shortly before the surrender of the Imperial fleet.

The Aftermath

After the disastrously expensive attack on Kajal Mars, the Imperium of Kajal remained hostile, but took no further action against the former colony, having neither the resources to maintain a home defense fleet, nor the public relations machine to justify the loss of such a large number of vessels again. The Imperium itself very nearly collapsed inward, focusing on attempting to keep order on the Four Worlds through the use of the military to pacify the public. Kajal Mars eventually recovered from the war, and is widely rumored to have been involved in the successful assassination of Emperor Dajal II later that year. When Lirella Keral returned to Kajal to govern until a democratic government could be established in place of the Imperium, Lady Soryaan was elected Duchess in Kajal Mars, where she reigned as Head of State until Kajal Mars willfully joined the Four Worlds, the democratic republic that had been forged from the ashes of the Imperium of Kajal. Soryaan currently serves as Regional Governess of Kajal Mars.
