The Most Serene Republic of Shailan is a large tropical island in the West pacific. It is ruled by the president, Suyapa Samara Nyeda, and a parliament of elected officials, but also has a highly esteemed and treasured royal family, headed by the queen, The Merciful and Beautiful Thamasa Ayesha Shaila. The royal family rarely makes governmental decisions but is the center of authority for culture and religion. They are highly respected and on the rare occasion are consulted when a consensus can't seem to be reached on an important issue -- the queen's decision is the tie-breaker. The people of Shailan are very devoted to their religion which is monotheistic and includes holidays, spirits, superstitions, and many traditions. The religion and culture is woman-centered and femininity is idealized. Beauty, physical and that of the surroundings, is at the heart of the Shailan culture, that prizes its abundance of perfume, heaven-like gardens, hot springs, waterfalls, and beaches, unique and calming architecture, streamlined and flowing clothing and hairstyles, make-up reminiscent of ancient Egypt, forever jingling jewelry, each person's graceful demeanor, exquisite, fragrant, and visually appealing recipes, and mezmerizing language, music, and folktales. Despite a culture steeped in religion and tradition, Shailanians are level-headed and logical, peaceful and fair. Most observe a three-day workweek, and vacation often. Shailanians know how to party and make people feel welcome. Family is very important -- they have many children, and crime is minimal. Greed, jealousy, and dishonesty are frowned upon.
