Socialism

Socialism is ideology or a group of ideologies. It is however a very broad category, ranging from the extremes of communism to the capitalist welfare state. It can also refer to an economic system or a state that exists or has existed. In Marxist theory, it is the society that would succeed capitalism, and then develop further into communism.
As with all major beliefs, socialism is well represented in the Nationstates universe. Like in the real world, nations describing themselves as socialist may range from communist dictatorships to democratic welfare states and almost every form of government in between. However the majority of socialist states (as opposed to socialist governments) tend to practice Marxist policies or their derivatives. Many of these nations are eager to avoid the stigma often associated with communist regimes. This is a direct reflection of real life politics where the term “communist” often conjures up images of brutal dictatorships such as the Soviet Union. In this case the term socialist is often adopted to indicate that the nation does not condone such brutal policies and has either a democratic system of government or does not operate an entirely planned economy.
