History

The Crusades

The Armed Republic of South Somerset was formed in the aftermath of a destructive civil war in 1953 after a bloody past. Recorded history only exists back to 1095, when a group of crusading soldiers from a neighbouring kingdom settled there after returning from one of the many crusades for, what was then, the Holy land. When they settled they were treated suspiciously by the many local tribes in the region. In 1110, 15 years after the crusaders had first settled, they were attacked by these tribesmen. In a large battle, named "The Battle of the Field of Blood" the settlers defeated the tribesmen, who swore fealty to the settlers' leader, Count von Blomberg. They formed the first ruling power the nation had ever seen, and used the locals own language, a debased form of Latin, as a way of communicating with the locals. This ruling house kept the land together for nearly 500 years, when in 1606 a civil war between the aristocracy and the peasants ripped the nation in half.

The land was eventually re-united in 1787 by the aristocracy, who had steadily raised a large army and defeated the peasant army at "The Battle of Lowlan Moors".

Rise of the Monarchy

The nation was officially renamed "The Kingdom of South Somerset" in 1788, and the language was officialy changed to English.

This new monarchy soon desired an Empire, and from 1810 onwards they sent their armies out on many campaigns in nearby regions. The Republic of Mendip District was the only nation in the region that could stop The Kingdom of South Somerset from taking over her lands. The ruling house was so impressed by this small nation's ability to stop the best army in the region ,that they sent Prince Conrad and General von Papen to Mendip to arrange a alliance. This alliance was accepted, and the two nations have been close allies ever since.

In 1870 the army was again defeated, this time by the Republic of Third Republican in "The Battle of the River Cale". Again, the Ruling house was impressed with Third Republican and arranged an alliance with them as well. As with Mendip District, they have remaind firm allies ever since that day.

From 1880 onwards the Empire started to break apart, many of the nations rising up against their oppresser and driving South Somerset's forces out. This went on until the 1950's when yet another civil war raged in the nation. This civil war was started by the Army, under the command of General Puches. This was a highly destructive war, and the Aristocracy were defeated, and executed by the Army's Special Forces, in a spectacular raid on the palace. After this, General Puches took over the government and re-named the nation "The Armed Republic of South Somerset".

The Military Take Over

The Army was then restructured in 1954 to accomodate newer technologies and to absorb new tactics. Also Political Officers, who are known as "Commissars", and conscription were introduced. The Navy was also restructured and more powerful ships were introduced. A Naval Air Arm, named later as the Fleet Air Arm, came into being in 1964, with the first carrier, The Invincible, coming into service in 1965.

The South Somerset Air Force, the SSAF, was re-formed in 1955, and have since become one of the finest in the region, their aerobatics team, "The Black Arrows" being held in high regard by their neighbours.

The Armed Republic joined the United Nations (UN) in 1982 and has been elected as delegate for its region several times in the past.

General Information

The capital of the nation is the ancient coastal city of Port Baybury, with the city of Wincanton as the second largest city on the nation. There is one large mountain range in the nation, the highest peak being Mount Smalldown, which is 2211 ft high. This region is used as a training ground by the Army's Special Air Service (SAS) and the South Somerset Marine Corps.

On the lowlands of the nation lies the expanses of natural forests, home to the national animal, the chimera, a large mammal only found in South Somerset. They are quite aggressive and laws have been brought into effect that protects them, and prevents them being kept as pets.

The goverment is now led by General Cairns, and is classed as a Dictatorship. Many of the party's political opponents and political activists are silently executed by the party's Commissars.

The military is the largest in the region, and is commonly seen in exercises with its neighbours: Mendip District and Third Republican. It also provides military protection to Mendip District.
