The Republic of Southern Kent joined nation states in October 2007 and the region of England shortly after. Southern Kent is a fairly new nation in comparison to the rest of the world. Southern Kent was formed in 1602 the southern states of Kent formed an alliance under the leadership of Lord Johnstone and have ever since been striving to mark there place in world history. Southern Kent has a rich and troubled nautical past and is famous for its abundance of clay pits and the many forests and feilds of the nation are home to the last remaining blue tipped buzzards.

History

The Early Years

Recent discoveries in caves along one side of the cliffs in the Lenham National Park have revealed traces of burning and flintwork and reports suggest that people lived in Kent almost 50 million years ago. During the meno-spade era Kent was a hive of local trade to and from the continent, being a nation with such a rich coastline Kent benifited from such a wealthy trade network with neighbouring nations.

The Judanian Invasion of Kent

During the 12th Century Kent was invaded three times by the country of Judania. Becuase of kent's proximity to Judania tension had built to boling point during the summer of 1213 AD and Judania's forces were poised and ready to attack. Being a wealthy nation due to its increasing sea trade routes, Kent had no trouble in raising an army to repeal the invasion. But what Kent did lack was the organisation of its army. The Judania's attack again twice but with little sucess due to numbers and they finally gave up attempts to invade in the late 12th century.

The Depression

Sea trading routes decreased in the early 13th Century with the invention of the easier land based trading and Kent was left with little choice but to stop producing ships and bulidng wharfs beacuse there was no need for such a big sea trading fleet. During the 13th and the 16th century Kent was left to die. Its people fled to new and distant lands, in 1456 Kent's government couldnt keep up with the growing demand for financial support and anarchy set in. The depression led to various minor states being formed and Kent became a nation of 15 states. The depression also led to the execution of Victor Serpentine in 1596 and various members of his Government by 'The People's New State Alliance' and this provided an oppertunity for the re-building of a new Kent.

The Seven States Act

During the winter of 1598 Lord Johnstone, a wealthy landowner from Scotland rode into the city square in Maidstone. He declared that Kent was anyones and 'anyone' being him shall have the right to take it. In 1599 Lord Johnstone set up 'The Provisonal States of Kent' a nation that comprimised the seven states that made up the south of the Nation. North Kent had been merged into its neighbouring nation during the depression as a bid to end its suffering. Lord Johnstone created the 'Seven States Act' which brought the seven minor states that formed South Kent into an alliance and a new parliamentarian government was set up. The Republic of Southern Kent was formed in 1602 with its first Prime Minister Lord Johnstone as its head.

Government

The Government of The Republic of Southern Kent is an Parliamentary Republic with The Prime Minister heading the Goverment. The Head of State title was abolished in 1992 after a massive re-shaping of the nations Government. The Government is styled on the Westminster System which is adopted by many other nations around the world. Unlike many Republics, Southern kent chooses not to call its head 'President' but Prime Minister in an attempt to clean up realtions with other regions and to show its support for world politics. The Prime Minister is the most senior minister of a cabinet in the executive branch of government in a Southern Kent and is also Head of State, whose role generally includes personifying the continuity and legitimacy of the state and exercising the political powers, functions and duties granted the head of state in the country's constitution.

Economy

Southern Kent's economy is growing steadily with the rise in clay exports and software manufacturing and aims to become one of the leaders in the next 10 years. Maidstone exports mainly manufactured goods and imports materials such as petroleum, tea, wool, raw sugar, timber, butter, metals, and clay exporting over 30,000 tonnes of clay last year, worth around £75,000,000.

The central bank of Southern Kent, which sets interest rates and implements monetary policy, is the Bank of Kent Maidstone. Maidstone is also home to the Maidstone Stock Exchange, the main stock exchange in Southern Kent.

Traditional heavy and manufacturing industries (sea trading expecially) have declined sharply in Southern Kent in recent decades. Thus lowering the nations economy. During thsi time though, Clay became an important export and vital to the re-growth of the country's economy. Software manufacturing has also become an increasing market, with experts prediciting that Southern Kent will be a market leader within the next 10 years.

Education

Southern Kent's educational system came together in 1709 with the founding of the Education and Libaries act. The main purpose of this bill was to create a 'level playing feild', allowing all classes of children to enjoy a stable, free educational system. In 1856 the Government passed a law that allowed the formation of 'Sector' schools. These schools being open to children whose parents pay for them to attend. This law was opposed greatly by the opposition at the time and a massive strike took place outside Parlaiment house in the summer of 1857. The strike ceased to end the divide and sector schools still continue to provide some of the best education in the country.

The education system in Southern Kent is run by the Department for Schools and Libaries. The education is split into two main types; National schools which are funded through taxation and free to all, and sector schools, which provide a paid-for education on top of taxes.
