Spanish or Castilian is an Iberian Romance language. In the real world, Spanish is widely considered to be the third most spoken language, and a language in permanent expansion. In the NationStates world, the language also plays an important role, as many nations are Spanish-speaking to some degree. In some cases, the players behind these nations do so because they are Spanish speakers in real life, though in other cases they do it because they have sympathy towards the language or because it fits their roleplaying background. Such nations may also have mottos or nation names in Spanish or claim to have Spanish as an official language.

Some of these nations, when roleplaying, claim that the language was brought to their country by foreign invaders (thus emulating the real-life expansion of Spanish by colonialist policies), while others claim the language simply evolved naturally in their nations.

Relevance in the Nationstates World

Spanish has gained a great relevance in the NationStates world, some even claiming that it is second only to English. There is a good number of roleplaying nations that claim to have Spanish as an official language, making the language a moderately important presence in the NationStates forums. In roleplaying, Spanish can be considered to be a secondary language along with some other languages which have spread because they are based on RL such as Dutch, or German. In some nations Quenya has taken the role of being an alternative lingua franca.

The real bulk of Spanish speakers, however, exists outside the forums, where the Spanish speakers of NationStates have created several regions and groups for them. There are many regions devoted only to Spanish speakers, as well as regions for nationals of several Spanish-speaking countries.

Most people behind these nations are native Spanish speakers, coming mainly from RL Latin America and/or parts of the United States, though there is a good number of players coming from Spain as well.
