Overview

The Stanislav Lions are the current PopularFreedom Rugby League (PRL) champions.

The Stanislav Lions have throughout their existence been the best example of inconsistency in the entire PopularFreedom Rugby League (PRL). Despite at times putting together some of the best rugby teams in the league, the lions have also managed to put together some of the worst and therefore, though some seasons are extremely strong, others find themselves extremely weak and not much of a threat to anyone. The Lions play their home games in the city of Stanislav, PopularFreedom at Lions Den Stadium.

History

  • In 1983 the Stanislav Lions rugby franchise was formed in conjunction with the other seven teams of the league.
  • In 1985 the Stanislav Lions, after an unimpressive inaugural season, were able to march through the competition during the season, winning the president's trophy at the end of the season for coming in first overall. They then made their way through the playoffs crushing all competitors including the Viscount Bennett Imperialists in the PRL final 31-13 to win their first rugby championship for the city of Stanislav.
  • In 1990, after a few horrible years, the Lions again were defensively dominant throughtout the season. This penchant for strong defense led to the second championship of their existence with a crushing 53-3 annihilation of the Athens Invaders.
  • In 1995, the Lions again, after a few years of dismal play, had made it back to the PRL final by upsetting the favourite Locke Harbour Dragons in the semi-finals. The Lions again faced the Athens Invaders, as they had in 1990, and seemed to be on their way to their 3rd championship when a highly disputable knock-on call went against them in their own end allowing Athens to score the winning try off the ensuing scrum to snatch victory from the Lions. The Lions fans in Invasion Stadium in the city of Athens, PopularFreedom rioted in the streets as a result causing martial law and a curfew to be declared in the city for the next 24 hours.
  • In 1996, the Stanislav Lions, seeking revenge for what they deemed an injustice in the final the previous season, pounded all competitors throughout the season, winning their second president's trophy for being tops in the league after seasonal play. In the playoffs they showed their determination to win by absolutely crushing the Peace Warriors in the semi-finals 103-0 in the highest scoring match in the playoffs to this day. They then went on to face the defending champions Athens Invaders in the final at a war like Lions Den in Stanislav, PopularFreedom. The home crowd was not disappointed as the Lions completely dominated the Invaders, winning the final 35-25 in a match that was much closer in the final score than it had been throughout the entire affair.
  • In 1998 the Stanislav Lions were again the dominant team in the league, and unlike the previous season, were able to make it to the playoffs. Facing them was the Viscount Bennett Imperialists who were looking to avenge their loss to the Lions in the 2nd PRL final back in 1985. Throughout the match the Imperialists looked to hold the advantage over the Lions however in the last few minutes the Lions were able to score 2 quick converted tries to snatch a victory from the Imperialists with a final score of 42-41 to allow the Lions to clinch their 4th PRL championship.
  • In 2001 the Lions had hoped to be successful in their 6th PRL final appearance however a powerful Locke Harbour Dragons squad stood in their way and ensured this did not happen with a 33-10 clubbing. The game itself was a pivotal match in the history of the PRL as by winning it the Dragons ensured their continued eliteness by preventing the Lions from tying them for most championships in PRL history at the time.
  • In 2006, the Lions returned to the finals, however were stymied by an incredible Lenita Legions defense who virtually controlled the Lions the whole match. The final score was 19-6 for Lenita.
  • In 2007, the Lions, anxious for revenge for last season's loss in the final, stumbled into the playoffs after a strong first half of the season. In the playoffs however they were able to defeat the Athens Invaders in the semifinals in overtime. In the final they were able to score a drop goal in the 79th minute to win the match 23-21 before a packed Legionnaire Grounds in Lenita to give Stanislav their first PRL championship since 1998.
