Stonozka is the capital city of the Federated Segments of Scolopendra and is located in the eastern half of the continent Xanadu on the Saturnian moon of Titan.

Layout

The city of Stonozka, like most Scolopendran cities, has two major parts: Topside and the Caves of Steel, consisting of the surface city and the underground habitats respectively.

Topside

Topside Stonozka is primarily made up of skyscrapers set up in a regular blockwise city planform. The older skyscrapers in the center are taller, having been built up more; the skyscrapers at the edges are lower, oftentimes less than ten stories tall, giving the entire city a subtly pyramidal appearance. For safety reasons, Scolopendran skyscrapers are limited in height to sixty stories tall and made of reinforced concrete whenever possible. Their redundant safety features make them expensive, but durable. Those buildings that have reached their height limit usually have gardens on top.

The city is split up by several rivers that run down from the peaks of Xanadu to the seas to the east, and these rivers are crossed by large bridges named after important Scolopendran historical figures such as Maria Rostov. All civilian ground traffic in Stonozka, and most Scolopendran cities, is limited to foot or bicycle-equivalent traffic, with the vehicle roads reserved for public transportation and civil services use. This is done because, in the words of (then)2Lt Timofeyev Mikhail Jeffreyovich Bondayehr, "Flying cars are cool and all, but you don't want accidents in them." There are large open parks scattered throughout the city.

The Executive Apartments are located in Topside Stonozka.

The Caves of Steel

"The Caves of Steel" is the colloquial name for the underground habitats that make up most of Scolopendran living space. They are made up of large hemispherical domes with five-hundred meter radii carved out of the rock, painted blue to simulate sky, then lit with a white-light LED 'sun' that moves along an east-west track of LEDs while a central projector displays fractal 'clouds.' This simulates nature enough to prevent claustrophobia (or agoraphobia once people have acclimated to it) but is unreal enough to encourage people to get Topside when they can. These domes are built in a hexagonal lattice pattern, and deeper domes are set off so as to ensure proper loading and prevent cave-ins.

The skyscraper-cities are similar to those Topside in construction, but are laid out in a radial network of roads (also limited to civil service ground transport and foot traffic). The skyscrapers often have multi-level internal gardens, the 'agro-arcologies,' and practically all have large, landscaped rooftop gardens because they are limited by the dome above them and space is at a premium.

The University of Stonozka is located in the Caves of Steel.
