About the map... while I can undertsand the polder projects and all, wouldn't polding up the entire Wadden Sea/IJesselmeer/Markermeer area seriously effect if not destroy altogether Amsterdam's status as a port. I mean, the whole canal thing seems to rely on Amsterdam's being on a river and near the ocean. Or am I wrong about this? ~You-Know-Who

Actually, no. It does not. The thing is, there is a canal between Amsterdam and the North Sea. It is called the "North Sea Canal", for the sake of simplicity. However you are right when you conclude that Amsterdam harbour is not the main harbour for Knootoss due to the fact of it being rather inland. Nowadays, the canals in the city itself have more to do with tourism and just looking nice then with carrying actual ships with economic activity. Those (container and tanker) ships would need waaay more room anyway so the canals in the city itself are out, but there *is* a harbour that connects to the North Sea canal and there *is* some serious industry near that harbour. UN HDI Nonsense

While I like the idea of an NS UN HDI, unless it comes from the webgame, it really is nonsense. The number which has currently been produced as Knootoss' UNHDI is as good or better than the very best UNHDIs in the real world - it would be fifth. Now, while Knootoss has a higher GDP per capita than any country in the real world other than Luxembourg (which is rated 4th in the world on the UNHDI with a UNHDI score of 0.949), it has a very very low life expectancy according to the text of the article, of only 60 years. Considering that Luxembourg's RL UNHDI is 0.949, that it has a higher life expectancy than Knootoss (by 18 years or so), and that it has a higher GDP per capita, this leaves only education. Knootoss has excellent standards of education, but so does Luxembourg, with an 88% enrolment ratio and effective 100% adult literacy rate. In short, in the three major areas on which an UNHDI is determined, Luxembourg comes ahead of Knootoss on two and, I would say, equals it in the third. Yet Knootoss' UNHDI is directly comparable to Luxembourgs? To summarise, I like the idea of NS nations having an NSUNHDI... but it should come from the webgame, it shouldn't be arbitrarily determined, and if it was to be determined on what Knootoss is RPed like, it would be substantially different to Luxembourg's 0.949 instead of so close. --Pantocratoria 02:51, 26 January 2006 (GMT)

I think it'd be great if we had some nifty source for a number like UNHDI, but if we are just going to make them up out of thin air, then we all know that some people (not you or Knoot of course) will just give themselves silly UNHDIs so that they can say "Yay I'm better than <<country>>". For the record, Ceo's neat little calculator actually bumped up my UNHDI .003 points from .939 to .942, using stats from NSEconomy. While NSEconomy is biased, obviously, it is the most widely used - could we agree, perhaps, that for the time being everyone calculate their UNHDI using their preferred calculator? -- the Philosophes 23:50, 29 January 2006 (GMT)

Everyone does what he/she likes anyway so I do not see how agreement or disagreement is relevant here. I'd also like to note that the Knootian life expectancy is not very low considering that 15% of the population is of elvish origins. The matter of GDP per capita is a diffuse one (and arguably the luxembourg example is a bit unfair, given their very small size.) Knootian education would, in my opinion, be superior to that of any RL contemporary system. However I would not know how human development would be calculated in NS given the qualitative differences. It's very low for humans, however, and the maximum life expectancy to be considered by the scale is 90, and it is a human development index. I am playing around with CHDI trying to make a calculator anyway. I do wonder, however, how Knootian education is so great when so little money is invested in it (if only because you have very low tax levels) - I have argued that CHDI should take GDP per capita more into account to represent ability to afford costly (but high quality) private education because the present system scores Knootoss too lowly IMO. --Pantocratoria 17:05, 30 January 2006 (GMT)

Exactly, Panto - I had to actually factor, for mine, the private spending of healthcare and education. Private healthcare spending makes up all of the HC budget and private education spending 80% of that budget, so it was scoring me .462 because my healthcare input had to be zero for the life expectancy formula.
