In the fast-paced world of business, making a better product might seem to be less important than its marketable image. However, no one can deny that new technology will mean new products, which helps expand business. The philosophy of the Terra Corporation is that research is of paramount importance in order to create the "next big thing" or to remain ahead of its global competitors. Computers revolutionized the world and the Internet revolutionized computers. Though the Terra Corporation did not invent either, it is at the forefront of information technology and computer research.

The war boom and the influx of refugee scientists and engineers have only improved the Terra Corporation's ability to innovate. With the stabilization of the post-PRC world, many of the refugee engineers have returned home though a number have stayed on. In order to continue to capitalize on the abilities of the region's engineers, Terra Corp Research recently opened a large research and production facility in Taiwan. This domain (paid for and built on reclaimed land near Kaohsiung by the Terra Corporation) is officially Taiwanese land but Terra Corporation has full control over visas to enter the area (similar to the Vatican's setup with Italy). Another benefit of the new Taiwan research/production center is its boost to Terra Corporation's public image in the region.

To mirror the new research center's importance, the Terra Corporation has upgraded the status of Terra Corp Research to a pseudo-autonomous subsidiary. Its main areas of research are information technology (namely quantum and nano-computing), biogenetics, nanotechnology, next generation energy solutions (fuel cell, chemical, and fusion), and alloys (both metallic and carbon-based). There are plans to open smaller research centers in Japan (focusing on machinery and robotics), Korea (focusing on electronics and electromagnetic radiation research), and China (ballistics, space technologies, and military). Terra Corp Research has a strategic partnership with Fiat Lux Colleges in non-military research fields whereby professors work for the Terra Corporation when not teaching. This mutually benefitial agreement has come under severe strain recently as students protest any cooperation with Terra Corp due to its wartime activities. Despite recent problems, Terra Corp Research is emerging to become a crucial component of the Terra Corporation conglomerate and its region-wide activities serve as an economic and scientific link for the region's powers.
