History

When you know what it is to weep at the sight of beauty; then you will know what it is to be D'Angeline.

"A thousand and more years ago, as the true-gotten son of the One God, Yeshua ben Yosef [Jesus Christ], hung dying upon the wooden cross, his side was pierced by a Tiberian spear and his blood fell upon the soil, mingling with the tears of his beloved, the Magdalene [Mary Magdalene]. And because their union had never been sealed, Earth Herself took pity upon them and in the damp soil She quickened the divine seed of life, and of it blessed Elua was born, and he was nurtured in the womb of Earth.

Misbegotten and reviled by Yeshuites [Early Christians] and Tiberians [Romans] alike, Elua was cast out to wander, and flowers bloomed where his feet trod. And where he went, people feared him, for he was strange to them, and the One God scorned him, mourning only for his true-gotten son. But when the King of Persis cast blessed Elua in chains, there were among the angels in Heaven those who took pity upon him."

These angels were (first) Naamah, clever Shemahzai, gentel Eisheth, kind Anael, proud Azza, martial Camael, curel Kushel, and lastly Cassiel who came to Elua's side for the One God had forgotten him. And they travelled, feared one place, respected the other - but at a distance. They knew not, nor cared if the One God's eye was upon them for they sang and danced where they went.

Finally, after travelling long distances and a great time they found a land where they were welcomed and loved. And these people Blessed Elua called his own. And the land was called Terre DeAnge. And Elua's precept was "Love as thou wilth". The land was divided into seven parts, save for Cassiel who remembered the One God and took an oath to stay by Elua's side and protect him and loved him as a brother. And they did lay with women and with men and begat children, save for Cassiel who remembered the One God's commandments. The other did not, and taught their children the secrets they brought from Heaven and they grew skilled in many arts.

And once the One God stopped grieving for his Only Son he turned his attention to Elua and was angry, seeing Elua and his Companion's offspring would over take the earth. It became clear though that Elua did not answer to Heaven, yet was still mortal. And so the One God bade Elua and his companions to come to the right side of his throne. Elua did cut his hand with Cassiel's dagger saying, "My grandfather's Heaven is bloodless." Where Elua's blood fell, scarlet anemones bloomed. And their children and children's children did watch. Earth and her once-husband, the One God, did make a plan and created a new Terre DeAnge.

And this is the true Terre DeAnge, and Elua and his Companions went, only Cassiel looking back in sarrow. They did not pass through the gate of death.

"Generation upon generation, the blood of Elua and his Companions runs still in the veins of their descendants, each of whom will one day follow to the land that lies beyond. And though centuries pass, they do not forget, but call their land still after that further one, and keep always sacred the precept of blessed Elua, that is, "Love as thou wilt."

Such is Terre DeAnge."

(adepted from "Earth Begotten")

All those that are native D'Angeline come from the scions of Elua and his Companions. Meaning, that everyone in Terre DeAnge has the blood of Elua or angels in him or her.

Providences

Namarre

Capital: Troyes-le-Mont

Namarre is her land, where her scions are clear sighted in heart, and offer the passions of the body shamlessly. To serve her, as her Priestesses and Servants do, is to pay homage to her sacrifices. The land reflects Naamah's beauty very much so.

Siovale

Capital: Lessar

Siovale is know for producing the most of those that join the Cassieline Brotherhood. Shemahzai, who founded the mountainous region, was a soft spoken and intelligent angel, reverred knowledge. He named his province Siovale and encouraged his scions to follow their desire to learn. And staying true his scions seek whatever knoweledge they can.

Within its boarders the Sanctuary of Elua can be found, and in its capital is the most reviered University of Shemahzai. It is on the same level as, if not above, Oxford, Harvard, and other such places of learning. It accepts not just D'Angeline students, but student from all over having the passion to learn.

Eisande

Capital: Markilikos

Eisheth, who was talented in many of the arts, settled in her province of Eisande, and her scions were gifted playwrights, authors, bards and gymnasts. She was also the one to teach D'Angelines how to lie. Her scions are know to be kind and gentel. They are also excellent healers.

In the capital of Eisande, Markilikos, the ruler is always a woman and she is called the Lady of Markilikos. Taking the name after Eisheth, who was the first Lady of Markilikos. If there is lack of a female heir, the man's wife, consort or companion shall take the title and all the rights that come with it.

L'Angnace

Capital of Terre DeAnge: City of Elua

The scions of Anael settled here. Anael was gifted with husbandry and picked a fertile land where he and his scions could cultivate this gift. Scions of Anael have a mark - that of the smell of apples. L'Angnace supplies most of Terre DeAnge with their crops and animals for food. It is the leader in cereals, sugar beet, cattle and poultry. Unlike the other providences, L'Angnace does not have a territorial capital for the nation's capital resides within its boarders.

L'Angnace iss big, wide and relatively empty: over half its surface area is farmland, and some four-fifths of the country is rural. The D'Angeline economy industrialised relatively late, so family links to farms and villages still linger. And the D'Angeline are keenly aware that it is their farmers who keep the countryside the way that the tourists who descend on it each year like it.

Azzalle

Capital: Trevalion

<div" class="plainlinksneverexpand">countryfrenchhideaway.jpg

Azza, whose sin was pride, settled in Azzalle, and his scions are strong of will. His scions are undoubtably the most stubborn in the realm. They are very proud of their heritage and country. It is unwise to cross them.

Sitting upon the north coast of Terre DeAnge, many scions of Azza are pulled to the ocean. Many of them (men and women) become sailors, leaving land to travel abroad. They are known as master of the seas that are around Terre DeAnge. They love to be the go betweens when it comes to diplomacy. For them any earrand is important if it comes from their ruler.

Camlach

Capital: d'Aigelmont

Camael, a strong angel who defended with honor, chose a rocky northern province which he called Camlach, and his scions were gifted with the art of the sword, indeed, no finer warriors does Terre d'Ange produce. They do send the most sons into the D'Angeline military. They are second in sending sons to the Cassieline Brotherhood.

Kusheth

Capital: Morhban

Kushiel was called the Punisher of God. His province, Kusheth, is home to the cruel and compassionate scions he begot. Hs true scions bare the unmistakeable brillant shapphire blue eyes and black hair with a blue sheen to it, they also have porcelan white skin. They make look fragile, but are far from it.

Religions

For the most part D'Angelines worship "Blessed Elua and his Companions". There is no set structure (i.e. not church, no proceliting, etc). It is up to the person to take part in worship, such as going to Elua's Santuary (his temple) or visiting Kushiel's Temple, or going to "the Court of Night-Blooming Flowers" (the courtesan guild of Terre d'Ange, AKA the Night Court) in the City of Elua. The Night Court is where people become adepts of Naamah, participating in the same actions she did on Elua's behalf. For outsiders this looks like men and women selling their bodies for a night of pleasure, but to D'Angelines this is paying tribute to Naamah, for if she had not laid with the King of Persis Elua would not have lived.

85% of the population worship Blessed Elua and his Companions, 15% are of various religions such as Roman Catholic, Protestant Religions, Jewish, Buddhist, Islam, etc.

Other

On a side note, for those that do not know this. Terre DeAnge is based on Terre d'Ange of Kushiel's Legacy by Jacqueline Carey. Most of the information comes from her books. Terre d'Ange, though, during her novels is in the medevil period, while Terre DeAnge is our modern timeline. All characters in this timeline are mine, unless I say otherwise (such as Elua and his Companions). Figures in history will most likely be Ms. Carey's property, again unless I say other wise.

Please feel free to stop by "Ms. Carey's personal site".
