The House of Sanctus is the ruling family of the Holy Catholic Union of Chirondom, and has ruled Catholic Union for over a hundred years. The House has seen five Emperors, including Emperor Matthew IV, Emperor John II, Emperor Reemus I, Emperor William III, and Emperor Reemus II. It is the first Chiron dynasty of the modern age. It was created by the leader of the Religious Resistance Front (a group that battled a bizarre Protestant usurper of Chirondom sect known as Quali'zar), Matthew Vermond,
History
Pre-House of Sanctus
Sometime in between -10 Sanctus and -8 Sanctus, President/Emperor Matthew III was assassinated by a group of Protestant Rebels who called themselves the Quali'zar. The Quali'zar were led by Holy Dictator George the True Lion I, who believed that Jesus was the spawn of the Earth, the Earth being God. The Quali'zar were often compared to Druids in that regard, and were seen as anti-religious in some ways. In an attempt to avoid retallation from other Catholic nations, George the True Lion I set up an elaborate ruse in which Chirondom would appear to be Catholic to foriegn nations.
In -5 Sanctus, a group of loyal Catholics gathered in secret in the "Farmer's Utopia" territory of Chirondom. They decided that they would fight the Quali'zar and attempt to contact other Catholic countries. They elected Matthew Vermond as their leader, and thus the Religious Resistance Front was born.
In -4 Sanctus, the first rebel attack on the capital was recorded, in which George the True Lion's son was killed and George was wounded. In -3 and -2 Sanctus, the rebel attacks continued to hit hard on the capital. The Catholic rebels used terrorist tactics, blowing up government buildings and vehicles. The Quali'zar made it appear to foriegners as if Protestant rebels were attacking.
In -1 Sanctus, the RRF planned a full frontal attack on the Chiron Palace, a battle that would forever be known as the "Battle of Sanctus", as Sanctus is the Latin word for "rule." The RRF stormed the Palace and killed the usurper George. A few weeks later, the RRF declared themselves null and void and also declared Matthew the Emperor of Chirondom. Matthew took the last name Sanctus, in honor of the last battle of the RRF. He married Elizabeth Hawkings, a fellow rebel, and created the House of Sanctus. Chirondom quickly joined the Holy League
Heresy
Matthew's reign was relativly uneventful until Sanctus 19, when Matthew, a liberal Catholic for his time, proposed to the Holy League that women be given the right to be ordained in the clergy. Pope Emmanuel III immediatly excommunicated Matthew and placed Chirondom under interdict. Matthew remained adamant in his position, much to the chagrin of his subjects.
However, the interdict on Chirondom would be short lived, as, at the command of the Cardinal of Chirondom, Emperor Matthew's eldest son, John Sanctus, drove a knife through his father's chest and took the position of Emperor, styling himself as His Highness, Holy Emperor John II. The interdict was lifted.
John's Reign
Emperor John II was an extremely conservative Catholic. He brought the inquisition into Chirondom and finally completely outlawed all non-Catholic religions. His reign was a very peaceful one. He was loved by the conservatives in the nation and despised by the more liberal Catholics.
