The Imperial Senate

The Imperial Senate is the centerpiece of the Pastocian socialist government.

Housed in the Senatorial Chambers in the capital of Pastantinople, the 500-person elected body effectively runs the entire country through majority vote. The senators all represent the various districts of the Republic ranging from major cities to tiny villages, and are elected to a 2 year term, after which they are permitted to run for office for an unlimited number of times.

At the head of the Imperial Senate is the Consul and his two Sub-Consuls or "Proconsuls". The first consul, Nasty Pasty was elected by a senatorial vote in late 2050, but after he abdicated power in 2052, the position was to be filled by way of a nationwide election, from which citizens are able to choose from the 2-4 candidates selected by the different divisions of the government (The Senate, the Pastocian Communist Party, the Imperial Armed Forces, and the Foreign Ministry). While many consider this to be an unfair way of selecting the choices because of their unity under the PCP banner, Pastocia's politicians are well-known for having many differing views on politics, despite they allegance to the socialist ideal.

The Proconsuls however are still elected within the senate and after the two-year term of the Consul, one is selected by a Senate vote to be their candidate for the next Consulate elections. The Proconsuls have the power to override the Consul's final veto on a senate vote, and if the occasion calls for it, are able to give a call of "No-Confidence" in the Consul, from which the Senate votes whether to keep current Consul in office or to replace him with one of the Proconsuls.

The Senate chamber itself was once the Imperial Treasury when the country was still known as Austria-Hungary, and after the Communist revolution of 2050 which created the People's Republic of Pastocia, it was converted into the chamber but the "Imperial" prefix stuck with it because of the nation's fondess for history and tradition. The building is a marvel of engineering and was constructed in the ancient Urallian columnated style. On the front steps of the stands a great marble statue of the Goddess Turanga Leela which is over 200 years old. And to it's left is a newer statue which shows Pastocia's founding father, Nasty Pasty, restraining a wild stallion which represents the old tyranny of the Austrian Emperor.
