The Floating World of the Magdalen Islands is a small 12-island archipelago located in the region Democratic Underground. In the last 50 years the Magdalens have become prominent as a haven for artists, writers, publishers and political activists. As well, a number of companies specializing in the manufacture of telescopes and scientific equipment has recently flourished.

The capital of the Floating World is Havre-aux-Maisons. English and French are the official languages. The form of government is that of a multi-party parliamentary democracy elected every four years by a system of proportional representation. The leader of the party in power is called the prime minister.

Magdalen Islands Day, the national holiday, is July 20. Its annual Festival of Literature is usually held in the first week of October. The Islands may be accessed by regular ferry service and by small aircraft.

The Magdalen Islands are famous for their ornithological diversity and red sand beaches, all of which are protected by environmental legislation.
