The Manchu’s are descendents of the nomads who went on to conquer China, the Nuzhen, as the Manchu Marchers are called in there own language are the descendents of a group that went on to resist Nurhaci (the Manchu conqueror of China) and fled leaving the bulk of there people and travelling north. Over the next 4 centuries the Nuzhen were forced to defend their independence from the Mongols, Chinese and Russians. Despite stronger neighbours they survived and unlike there kin in China they have remained Manchu in culture and language.

Culture and Society

The Nuzhen culture is dominated by the pastoral traditions handed down by their nomadic ancestors and the shamanistic religion revolves around the worship of the supreme deity, Enduri the Sky God and the demigods Tian, Tan and Uya representing the Sun, Moon and earth respectively. . The ancient system of clans or Mukun remains strong in society, the Wanyan and Aisin clans are dominant but the Yuwen clan are the strongest with control of the monarchy.

Government

The head of state is the Emperor, whose title is hereditary and is the preserve of the Toi Yuwen family. There is no elected government on a local or national level and power is channelled through the Imperial Governors who are appointed by the Imperial Court. In judicial terms while the Supreme Court is the highest power however the Emperor reserves the right to appoint members of the court and at anytime to overturn any decision made. The Manchu March also criminalizes what it considers anti-National activity, including criticism of the Emperor or association with the growing republican activists in exile.

Military

The Imperial armed forces remains small and the only unit of note are the Imperial Guard, who are charged with the defence of the Imperial Court and the Kangde Palace. This regiment is highly feared and on more than one occasion has brutally crushed republican revolts with ruthless efficiency.

Climate

The Manchu March has a temperate climate with long, cold winters and cool summers. In the winter heavy snowfall is common.

Demographics

The ethnic Nuzhen make up 78% of the population, ethnic Chinese account for 14% largely concentrated in the capital and surrounding districts. Other minorities include Mongols (3%), Koreans (3%) and Japanese and Russians (roughly 1% each). The national language is Manchu however Mandarin and Russian also have a form semi-offical status.
