From the NS World Factbook: The Principality of The New Model Army is a small, devout nation renowned for its strong anti-business politics. Its compassionate population are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

History

The New Model Army was founded as a military alliance by seperate factions occupying Bama and Dama Islands in the South Mogs Sea during the Victorian Era as a response to the threat of invasion by the British East Indies Company and French Indochina. The Dama Pact formally organized the militias of the islands into a single standing army. After a year of intense fighting, the British and French forces retreated and the factions unanimously voted to amend the Dama Pact with provisions creating the state of The New Model Army.

Despite its name, the New Model Army does not operate under a military regime nor is it under perpetual martial law: there is a clear distinction between civil and military authorities, with civil authorities being paramount.

Policitcs

Prior to the founding of The New Model Army in the Dama Pact, each seperate ethnic group established their niche or enclave on Dama Island (the Umaro were adamant that Bama Island remain uncolonized) as a sovereign political entity independant of one another.

In technical terms, the modern government of the New Model Army is Democratic-Socialist. Private enterprise on the corporate level is illegal, although recent economic conditions have forced the government to make a few concessions with regards to big business.

The government is run by a single political party that comes to power only with the blessing of three-quarters of the opposition parties with the exception of the judicial branch, which remains independant of political parties. The citizens of The New Model Army hold the right to enfranchisement very dear, therefore in order for the country to be run efficiently the executive branch is granted more power than in most democracies. However, in the parliamentarian tradition of its namesake, the Houses Parliament of The New Model Army also commands a small armed force that answers only to the legislature (see Red Wings); all other armed forces answer to the executive.

The Umaro People are also represented in Houses Parliament and have citizen status in the New Model Army; however, they are accorded a higher degree of autonomy in running their own affairs, a status that dates back to the Treaty of Bama Island in 403 CE.

The socially-minded government is mainly concerned with maintaining a high degree of individual rights and freedoms for its citizens as well as allowing them a high amount of political freedom without becoming bureaucratized and inefficient. Other important agendas concern reforming the command economy and environmental conservation.
