Government

The Portuguese Union is a socialist representative democracy, with many government sponsered amenities with annual elections. The Congress is the national governing power. There is one representative for each district, and each district is limited to one million people. The nation is part of the region of Europe. The capital city of the nation is Lisbon(Λισβoα). Presidential elections occur annually every 22 July. The current President is Jake Ryder of Lisbon. A President may be elected as many as 10 times. The Portuguese Union is also a member of the United Nations.

Regions

The nation is divided into Municipalities(Mυvικιπαλιδαδες/מטנצפאלדאדס), Regions(Pεγιõες/רגעס), and Districts(Διστριτoς/דסתרתעס). Each district has one million people and are usually redefined anually to meet the one million population requirement. Each district elects one representative for Congress. The regions are groups of Portuguese speaking districts which control regional government spending. The head of each region is the Govener and he is in charge of the government projects and regional matters which occur within his/her boundaries. Goveners are elected every 2 years and a govener may be elected as many as 5 times. There are 7 regions in The Portuguese Union:

--Norte(Noρτε)

--Centro(Κεvτρo)

--Lisboa e Vale do Tejo(Λισβoα ε Bαλε δo Tειo)

--Alentejo(אלנתע)

--Algarve(אלגארב)

--Açores(Aκoρες)

--Madeira(מאדרא)

Municipalities and Other Languages

There are also Municipalities, which are limited to one Metropolis, and are also split into Districts and act in the same way that Regions do. The Municipalities of the nation are:

--Madrid(מאדרד)--Spanish Speaking

--Barcelona(בארצלענא)--Catalan Speaking

--Roma(רעמא)--Italian Speaking

--Paris(Παρις)--French Speaking

--London(Λovδov)--English Speaking

--Berlin(Bερλιv)--German Speaking

Alphabet

The northern half of the country uses the Greek alphabet, while the southern half of the country uses the Hebrew alphabet. Both of these are modified versions which are adapted to be convenient to the languages to which they serve.

Public Transportation

<div" class="plainlinksneverexpand">bullet_train.jpg

The Portuguese Union has invested the majority of it's money into Public Transportation. There is a Metro(underground) system in every town, city, and metropolis. Since cars are banned in cities, these systems are extremely elaborate and reach every part of every town. A one way Metro ticket is only §0,25.

The inter-city rail system is extremely fast and efficient and reaches every part of the nation in every town. The Alfa Act states that no train may travel on national tracks at a cruising speed of under 300kph. The majority of trains travel at around 400kph. Trains are very cheap also in The Portuguese Union(as all transportation is) and a round-trip second class ticket on a train from Lisbon to Faro will cost you only §20 and the journey is only 3 hours each way.

The air system in the country is very efficient. There are a multitude of airports dotted around the country. Air travel is extremely competitive and airlines fight for your money by having the lowest prices. For example, a flight from Lisbon to Faro will take only 1h20m and cost you only §35. There are 13 major airlines in The Portuguese Union.

There is an underground system of service roads and emergency exits one level below street level. Those however are restricted for those purposes only.

Economy

The nation is also an extremely large and fast growing economic centre. The Escudo(Eσκυδo/סצטדע) sign is used by § and it is valued very high versus the Euro at €1=§0,55(17/7/05). The Portuguese Union economy is growing at an alarming rate but it is too early to tell at what percent because it is very inconsistant. There are major stock markets in Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Faro, Berlin, and London.

Since traveling around the country so easy and cheap, the transportation sector is basically holding up the rest of the country. Many people travel to big cities near or far after school or work for shopping, meeting friends, or going to a discoteca. The year-round beach resort spots in the south attract beach-goers from around the country and the region. With the Algarve being only 1200km(3 hours) away from Lisbon by train, 1h20m hour by plane.) many people find it much more convient to go on holiday there than abroad. Madiera has recently been connected with a Sea-Rail link to Lisbon connecting the two destinations in 3h45m by train(§32 round-trip second class) and 1h30m by plane(§50 round trip economy).

Education

The Portuguese Union education system is very modern and up-to-date. Government sponsered day-care begins at age 3 and lasts until age 5. There, children learn the 6 official languages of the nation. They are spoken to by the teachers of the school in all 6. Each teacher will speak to them in a different language. Children learn to be social and accept differences by playing games and making art. To pass pre-school sucessfully the child must be able to speak at least 2 languages fluently. Most however learn at least 4 fluently.

At age 6 children begin Primary School. They continue it until age 10. Here they learn basic mathematics, science, history, and grammar of the languages they know. If the child did not sucessfully pass pre-school then they continue the curriculmum of that in Primary school.

Then at age 10 children enter Lower Secondary School, which deals with an introduction to slightly more advanced mathematics, science, history, and the grammar of the languages they know. At age 14 they gradguate this.

At age 14 Upper Secondary School begins and last until they are 18. For the first year of this they will take 5 general courses. Science and Technologies, Social Sciences and Economics, Social and Human Sciences, Language and Literature, and Visual Arts. After their first year they choose one of these fields to specialize in. All education is required up to this point.

Between ages 18 and 20 the student may choose to go onto Undergradguate University. There are universities all around the country which specialize in different things and some very large universities which have an extremly large variety to choose from. The tution University in The Portuguese Union is free and obtaining a degree will take between 3 and 4 years. There are more than 3000 public and private universities accross the country each with it's own skill level and degree programs. Roughly 94% of students choose to go onto undergradguate university programs.

After that Gradguate University in an option. This is only partially government sponsered and the Universities themselves are responsible for declaring a tutition price for these. Tution for the average 2 year gradguate programs vary between §7.000 and §20.000 for the full 2 years. Roughly 58% of students choose to go onto post-gradguate university level programs.

There are more than 1000 television channels available to watch on them and one can surf the world wide web. Emergency public service announcments are also distributed through mobile phones as it is the quickest way to reach people. There are half a dozen mobile phone companies in the nation and there is coverage in every place in the nation, including Metros and Airplanes.
