Introduction
The Prevanian Air-fleet is a unique division of the Prevanian armed forces, consisting of 144 airships designed for compatibility with modern Warfare.
History
The Prevanian air-fleet was founded in the 1920s, during the massive boom of the airship industry. However, as the country didn't really go with the idea of planes, the airship stayed predominaant until it was declared obsolete.
In the 1980s hoever, funded by two massive corperations of Prevania, the Airfleet was re-enstated, equipped modernly and armoured to withstand attacks from nearly anything.
The Ships
The airships follow a long tradition in Prevania of being named after famous English, French, German and Russian military personnel. The Prevanian airfleet is led by the Diktator's personal airship, a heavily armed 1200 metre monstrosity that signals the doom of an attack by the slow-moving, deadly craft.
The Previnain Air-fleet consists of 4 fleets, each consisting of:
Attack
- 1 x Admiral Class Missile Battleship (900 metres long)
- 2 x Consul Class Missile Cruisers (800 metres long)
- 4 x Govenor Class Missile Destroyers (600 metres long)
- 4 x N Class Missile Destroyers (560 metres long)
- 6 x K Class Missile Frigates (500 metres long)
- 3 x T Class Patrol Ships (270 metres long)
- 1 x General Class Air-carrier (820 metres long, holds 5 Interceptors)
Non-Attack
- 2 x Air-tenders (350 metres long)
- 2 x Air-tanker (400 metres long)
- 7 x Transport Airships (620 metres long)
- 3 x D Class Recon Airships (220 metres long)
- 1 x Breakthrough Class Air-Assault Airship
Prevania has also recently built the DAS Danté fireship. It is controlled from another airship and is heavily armoured. Upon reaching the target at high altitude, it extends its giant dew-catchers, slowly gaining balast and downwards thrust, hurtelling towards an enemy capital.
Armour
560 m+
The airships keep their dominance in the modern skys by using an external armouered carapace of 10 mm steel. On top of this is usually placed sheets of chobam armour, to stop any missiles from penetrating the carapace of the airship and revealing the flammable interior.
Internally, the ships are divided into numerous cells of 50 cubic metres, each divided by a plastic film coated in a fire-retadant spray that stops the cell fire from spreading. Just so this doesn't happen, the interior of the airship is sprayed with a thick coat of fire-retardent materials, and hydrogen filled cells are reuglarly checked and drained of any oxygen/air that may have infiltrated the cells.
The gondolas are armoured with thinner steel, yet usually mount ERA bricks on the outside to stop any missile from damaging the gondolas.
Less than 560 metres
Airshisp smaller than 560 metres have much less armour, to allow them faster movement speed, higher altitudes and greater lifting power.
However, to prtoect from fires, they are all internally divided with plastic plates, usuall about 6, to stop any fires from spreading and destroying them. As a result, the airships have to rely on decoys and otehr defences to divert attackers.
Weapons
Air-to-air
As the names suggest, the primary armament of the Airships are batteries of missiles, usually locted behind the main gondola, or on a separate central gondola.
Usual battery sizes contain 16 AMRAAM AAMs, which are used to take down any enemy aircraft, with up to 8 batteries on the Admiral class Airships.
As well as the missile pods, there are uasually Miniguns located in the main gondola, for use on ground and/or aircraft, to act as a secondary armament should the missile pods run out of missiles.
Air-to-ground
The usual craft are armed with bombs, to flatten ground targets. As the platform is slow moving, accuracy is optimal, even for dumb bombs. Due to the crafts vast volume, up to 50 000 kilograms of ordinance can be fitted onto a Missile Crusier before buoyency is affected.
More increasing however, bombs are being repleaced by missiles mounted in the belly of the craft where the bomb-bay is, to allow for more precise targetting, with a massive payload of munitions.
Technology
The Prevanian Air Fleet has recently started a relativity drive progect. If successful, this will completly revloutionise warfare, rendering airships obselete and eliminating the need for large, flammable, gas bags. However, the relativity drive, working on physics that have been theorised to be nearly impossible, may not lie up to expectations.
