The Unaffiliated Lands

The Unaffiliated Lands is an anarchic island region east of New Imperial Roman lands. The Unaffiliated Lands is inhabited by various ethnic groups ranging from Arabs to Orientals. The UL, formerly known as Eastern Isles, was colonized by New Imperial Rome in 16th century, but NIR was forced to abandon it as result of Imperial Civil War between 1868-1876. The retreat of NIR from Eastern Isles was a quick and hasty one, and the power vacuum created a situation were many different warlords were fighting eachother for supremacy.

In 1967, the dictator of Eastern Isles, Hassan al-Rashid died under unclear circumstances. Death of al-Rashid initiated a civil war in Eastern Isles, and soon the situation degenerated into situation similar to power vacuum in late 19th century. NIR attempted to conquer Eastern Isles in 1980's, but intense casualties by guerrilla warfare forced the emperor to retreat. Howewer, various corporations and groups wanted to settle into the areas of Unaffiliated Lands rich in minerals, settlers soon moved in to Unaffiliated Lands. Because the emperor wants minimal presence in UL, many private paramilitary and mercenary groups, most famous of them The Peacekeepers, Cobb's Rangers and Red Wolves, prosper in the Unaffiliated Lands, doing jobs for corporations and various groups in UAL. Howewer, Imperial Navy ships are not an uncommon sight in UAL.
