The Principality of Tiberias Magna was founded by Francis Ptolemy in 2007 as the incorperation of the territory surrounding the Wakesburg city of Tiberias.
History
Foundation
In 2000, a group of wandering Catholic nomads settled in and around the Imperial City of Tiberias. This group was composed of religous fanatics that gave the Orthodox governor of the city problems. In 2003, a demonstration protesting the new construction of an Orthodox Church turn violent as Catholic protesters began attacking workers. The Imperial Governor responded by sending in the Imperial Militia, who quickly dispatched the rioters. This led to continuing problems that forced Emperor Nicholas II Wake to negotiate with the leader of the fanatics, Francis Ptolemy. Ptolemy demanded recognition of his faction as a legitimate power within the Wakesburg government. Nicholas granted the faction limited power of governance, and the province of Tiberias Magna became the center of the Catholic community within the Empire. By 2005, 90% of the nation's Catholics live in the area, and Francis knew that the time was right for further action. In 2007, he declared the Imperial Governor of Tiberias Magna deposed. In an effort to avoid a full-scale war, Francis quickly offered an oath of suzerainty to the Emperor, asking only to be acknowledged as Prince of Tiberias Magna. Nicholas, knowing full well that any campaign in the province would end in a terrible cost in life, agreed. Since then, the Principality and the Empire have worked together in harmony. This changed when Wakesburg released several political prisoners into the territory, creating an unstable element. A revolution quickly followed, creating a pro-imperial republic.
The Most Serene Republic of Tiberias Magna
After the formation of the republican government, the Prince Ptolemy was allowed to retain his throne, but was subject to recall by the Most Serene Assembly. Ptolemy, knowing how precarious his position, established a large trading company, and purchased the rights to many trade routes throughout the region. This generated large amounts of revenue for Tiberias Magna. Wakesburg then offered to open trading offices with Tiberias, with the direct goal of circumventing UN conventions on arms trading.
