People & culture

The ni-Tika Vanu are 99.4% Melanesian, according to official statistics. Other ethnic groups include Polynesians, Caucasians and Asians.

There is a sharp contrast between the coastal and near-inland areas, along with the small islands, on one hand, and the inland forests of the two main islands on the other. The latter areas are inhabited by a multitude of small communities, each with its own language, who have for the most part eshewed contact with the outside world, and who continue to live a technologically primitive lifestyle. Some have accepted the presence of missionaries from the coast, but for the most part they are left alone by the ni-Tika Vanu government.

In the rest of the country, the population is divided between urban and rural living, but is almost exclusively Catholic, and has been significantly affected by contact with the wider world.

Economy

Main article: Economy of Tika Vanu

Tika Vanu combines an enduring subsistence economy with elements of a market one. It uses the West Ariddian credit as its currency, and receives development aid from West Ariddia. The ni-Tika Vanu government has sought to minimise the demands for economic modernisation coming from Aqeyr, without antagonising its aid donor to the point of cutting off the flow of aid provided.

Politics

The country's Constitution proclaims it to be a Catholic nation, and religious laws are often strictly applied (except for the inland, "stone age" population, which is legally exempt from most aspects of the government's jurisdiction). The President is democratically elected every eight years, but must be a practising Catholic, male, and of chiefly rank. Parliament is equally divided between traditional chiefs with hereditary seats, the Church, and members of Parliament elected by the citizens. In practice, the latter are often chiefs rather than commoners.

Tika Vanu's closest ties with a foreign country are with West Ariddia, which provides economic development aid. Most of the foreign companies operating in Tika Vanu are West Ariddian, Tika Vanu's only embassy abroad is in Aqeyr, and West Ariddia maintains an embassy in Kewa.
