The Romans had numerous offices called Tribune (Latin Tribunus) - see Wikipedia Tribune entry for more details - but the most important of these was the Tribunus Plebis, or magistrate of the people, who had extensive powers to overrule the decisions of other magistrates or officials. Within the NS community, The Meritocracy has an office of Tribune who is essentially the head of the judicial system, and also has considerable powers to hold in check the executive branch led by the Consul and even over the Senate. The legal code of the former Senate was created by Tribune Free Trade States, and later revised by Tribunes Tekari and NewClarkhaller. There is not yet a legal code in the new Senate, although it is being worked on by Tribune Glasguensis.
