Tynelia is a mostly flat country with a small chain of low hills along the northern border. The land is well suited for farming and several rivers cut through the countryside. The western border is guarded by the great Nyrallan Desert, a huge expanse of hot blowing sand and little water. To the northeast forests mark the boundary of the nation while the east and souteast is connected to the Ocean where popular beaches and many hotels are located.

The temperatures are fairly warm along the coast where warm air from the south keeps the coast above freezing even in wintertime. However as you move inland the temperatures cool considerably and to the north heavy snows may fall along the border.

These cooler temperatures have resulkted in an extensive winter sports program in the north where cross country skiing along the hills and forests of the enviormentally sound countryside. Curling is the preferred indoor winter sport and Tynelia has many local teams and leagues. Hockey is only just beginning to catch on.

As you go south, baseball and football are king though the recent entry into world soccer play has vastly increased that sport's popularity as well. The Tynelian marathon which is run annually is considered one of the biggest sporting events of the year as the flatlands are kind to would be runners.

The capital city is Tyr, located along the southeastern coast where the Tynelian River flows into the sea, which was the home of Tynelia's royalty from when it was a monarchy. The other main cities are Damak in the north, known as the curling capital. Varrik, a resort city on the south coast, very popular with tourists. The third city is Haven, located further northwest along the Tynelian River in the central part of the country, the capital of the hearthland as it were. Its people are a bit more conservative and self-reliant than in other parts of the country.

Religion has never been much of a factor in Tynelia as its people were far too self reliant to waste time on some distant supreme being. However religion was never outlawed as the people feel that not even the governement should keep people from "wasting" their time on religion if they want.

The country is a socialist democracy run by President Jacob Martins, now serving his third straight three year term. Tynelia was a monarchy until about 60 years ago when the last heir of the Torasin family died. At that point none of the claimants had a particularly strong claim and rather than see civil war on multiple fronts the contending parties agreed to let the people decide. In the end Adam Gendrickson, a distant cousin of the Torasin family was elected and in thanks to those who put him there ended the monarchy and created a new constituion for the nation to follow. He was elcected to serve for four terms before stepping down and by then Tynelia was firmly on the path of democracy. The old nobility has not been forgotten, they have retained their titles and a small parcel of their lands though these ranks are mostly honorary for all the influence they have because of them.
