Ulyanov

Ulyanov is the capital and largest city of the Kelssekian province of Lupinissia. The city has a population of 3,924,711 (2007 estimate) and at 10.7 million, the city's metropolitan area population is Kelssek's tenth-largest. It is a major manufacturing centre and a centre of Lupinissian culture. The city's most famous landmark is the spectacular Mosque of Ulyanov, first built in 1149, although the current structure dates to 1709, having been rebuilt after the destruction of the city by invading forces. Ulyanov is historically a Muslim city and Russian, rather than French, is the second language in the city after English.

The city, believed to have grown in the late 12th century from a trading outpost, was the capital of the medevial kingdom of Lupinissia. It was captured in 1677 by the forces of Patrick II of Guedia and effectively razed to the ground. Over 90,000 of the local townsfolk were also believed to have been massacred by the invading army. The ruins of the old castle keep were discovered in 1984 during construction of an extension to the city's Metro system and the ruins are now an important archeological site.

Ulyanov today is a major producer of aircraft parts and engines, automobiles, and food processing. Roughly half of the city's products are consumed within the province.

Transportation

Ulyanov is served by a large, though decaying, Metro system. The city's Soyuz International Airport is the main hub of the Aeroflot Lupinissia airline.

Sports

Ulyanov's population have strong passions for two sports: ice hockey and water polo. The Ulyanov Wolves play in the Kelssek Hockey League and Spartak Ulyanov is Kelssek's historically most successful professional water polo team, and play in the Kelssek Water Polo League. The city is also home to the professional football team Ulyanov FC.
