Underhill
Nation: Ecopoeia
Function: capital
Population: ~290,000
Leader: none
Ecopoeia’s capital and second largest city, with nearly three hundred thousand inhabitants, is found near the eastern coast of the island of Chryse. The city was constructed by Celdonian colonialists in the late nineteenth century to serve as an administrative centre, the islands having finally been secured as Celdonian possessions. Central Underhill’s architecture is consequently very functional, the designers having made scant allowance for aesthetic considerations. There are several buildings set aside for housing large functions and, by Ecopoeian standards, reasonable transport links, including the nation’s largest airport. The city escaped the worst excesses of the 1968 and 1979 revolutions and, thanks to its favoured status with the Celdonians during colonial times and the Untan dictatorship after independence, has solid infrastructure and general facilities.

Typical Ecopoeian conurbations are centred on one or a small number of communities (such as the Dorsa Brevia matriarchy) and/or trades/industries (Bradbury Point, for example, is a rare mining centre). Underhill is something of an exception in this regard, resembling instead a more conventional Celdonian city, especially given the prevailing ethnicities.
