The Greater Ungava Metropolitan Area (GUMA) is a sub-provincial administrative district within the province of East Hiel, Domnonia. It comprises the metropolitan area surrounding the city of Ungava, and is essentially synonymous with Greater Ungava or MetroUngava. The seat is in Adera while the principal city is Ungava.

Geography

The Greater Ungava Metropolitan Area occupies the northeast coast of Yuril bay and the north coast of Inlad Bay. It lays south-east of the Hiel Range. The Jgnak River runs through a part of GUMA.

According to the 2006 census, 26,816,003 people live in the metropolitan area, about half of the population of East Hiel. GUMA 2005 estimates placed the population at 26,155,880, representing a significant growth. 24 of the province's most populous municipalities are located in the GUMA. The official land area of the district is 1,943.19 km² . It is the most densely populated regional district in Domnonia and one of the most densely populated in The IDU.

Administration

The principal function of the Greater Ungava Metropolitan Area is to administer resources and services which are common across the metropolitan area. These include community planning, water, sewage, drainage, housing, transportation, air quality, and parks.

For example, GUMA Regional Parks oversees the development and maintenance of 23 regional parks, as well as various nature reserveS and greenways. (The regional parks are distinct from municipal parks in that they are typically more "wild" and represent unique geographical zones within the region, such as bogs and mature rainforests.)

GUMA also works closely with the provincial government to oversee the Maedon-Hiel Isthmus Transit Company(TransHiel), which administers public transportation and major bridges and highways throughout the region. TransHiel also runs the BreathEZE program, which primarily aims to improve air quality by reducing harmful emissions from automobiles. In the period 2002 to 2006, this program is credited with reducing the air emissions in the urban area by thirty-five percent.

Ungava, City of

Ungava is a city on the southwestern coast of mainland East Hiel, Domnonia. The city is named after Captain Espre Ungava, a Keeslandian explorer. A resident of Ungava is called an "Ungavan". Ungava is part of the Ungava Greater Metropolitan Area. With a population of 26,816,003 (2006 estimate), it is the second largest metropolitan area in Domnonia and the largest in the province. The population of Ungava proper is 2,993,137. Ungava has a very ethnically diverse population: more than half of its residents have a mother tongue other than English. The city is growing rapidly, and the metropolitan population is projected to reach 28.6 million by 2010.

Ungava is located on the Yuril Bay coast, north of Adera. Its economy has traditionally relied on East Hiel's resource sectors: forestry, mining, fishing and agriculture. It was first permanently settled in the 1860s as a result of immigration caused by the Hiel Range gold rush, and developed rapidly from a small shipping town into a metropolitan centre following the arrival of the Domini-Inlad Railway in 1895. The Port of Ungava became internationally significant after reduced freight rates in the 1920s made it viable to ship export-bound Algar and Sendar crops through Ungava. It has since become the busiest seaport in Domnonia. The economy of Ungava has become more diverse over time, however. Ungava has a growing tourism industry, for example, and has become the third largest film production centre in Domnonia, after Souther and Cadorn.
