The United Nations Association Mikitivity (UNA-Mik) was founded in 2004 by Janet Van Dyne in order to promote the awareness of the United Nations both in Mikitivity and internationally. UNA-Mik is a non-governmental organization (NGO) funded by private citizen contributions and grants. UNA-Mik regularly would engage in national debates in order to defend the practices and decisions of the United Nations, while also encouraging that the people of Mikitivity take on a greater role in international politics.

The primary focus of the organization is outreach, but UNA-Mik is known outside of Mikitivity for its extensive documentation of United Nations affairs. Its primary documents to date have been to conduct surveys of nations UN voting trends and the change in UN membership over time.

Organized into local chapters at the city and village level, UNA-Mik will bring international speakers to the public in order to educate the people of Mikitivity about the political and cultural nature of the world. UNA-Mik also sponsors a number of Model United Nations (MUN) programs in addition to more traditional grants in the field of international relations.

History

In October 2004, Janet Van Dyne began coordinating work with similar NGOs in other countries to form an international confederation of UNA chapters. The first attempt at creating this international confederation was in the form of a United Nations Archive Association, in which UNA-Mik worked with the United Nations Archive Association of Tuesday Heights (UNAA-TH). Differences in opinion between the two organizations, prompted UNAA-Tuesday Heights and UNA-Mik to part ways.

Based on her success in Mikitivity, in November 2004, the Galdago contacted Van Dyne to help promote the United Nations Space Consortium (UNSC) and get the government of Mikitivity to prepare to host an international conference on illicit arms trade, as was promised by the United Nations resolution Reduce Black market Arms Sales. Galdago suggested that there might be greater international interest in the UNSC and arms conference, if the UNA-Mikitivity were to try again and form an international confederation of UNA chapters.

Recalling the differences in opinions between UNA-Mik and UNAA-TH, the new organization, now just called the United Nations Association (UNA), was set up with the additional goal of educating people and governments alike about the activities of United Nations created committees. The government of Mikitivity then offered to fund the establishment of a United Nations Organization (UNO), which it billed as another and independent NGO composed of representatives from any United Nations sponsored organization, committee, or project as well as representatives from any other NGO with an interest in the United Nations. The UNSC, UNA, and International Red Cross Organization (IRCO) were the first three NGOs to join the UNO.

In order to avoid a conflict of interests between the national and international chapters, UNA-Mik and Mikitivity Rote Kreuz both maintain separate offices in Miervatia from the regional headquarters of the UNA and IRCO.
