The University of Kirkenes (U of K) is a public research university. With its main campus located in downtown Kirkenes and satellite campuses in the suburbs of Missisauga and Scarborough, it is Kelssek's largest university, with a total of over 70,000 students. It was established under a royal charter on March 15, 1797 as the Royal Kirkenes University, and changed to its present name in 1802 when formerly independent St. Michael's College, Trinity College, and Victoria College merged into the university. It also has a strong historical rivalry with Lionsgate University.

Academic rankings consistently place the university among the world's best and many medical advances were made by researchers at the university. The campus is located in downtown Kirkenes about two kilometers north of the central financial district and adjacent to the city's civic district. The traditional heart of the university lies in the grounds of King's College Circle, enclosing an oval lawn known as Front Campus. The centrepiece is the main building of University College, a National Historic Site. The University of Kirkenes publishes more research than any other Kelssekian university and also boasts Kelssek's largest academic library, the largest endowment of any Kelssekian university (over $3.6 billion in 2006) and is by itself the 26th-largest employer in the Greater Kirkenes Area.

Colleges

Students in the Faculty of Arts and Science, by far the university's largest faculty, are members of Colleges. All teaching is done by the Faculty, while the Colleges take care of students' welfare and domestic arrangements.
