The Unified Capitalizt States (German: Vereinigte Kapitaliztische Staaten, Greek: Ενοποιημένα Κεφαλαιοκρατικά Κράτη Enopoiēména Kephalaiokratiká Krátē, Noterelenda: Estedes Kapitalízmires in Unídires, Syokaji: 통일뒌 자본가 주 Toŋʼildwen Jabonga Ju), formerly, and often informally, known as Commerce Heights (German: Handelshöhen, Greek: Υψών Εμπορίου Upsón Emporíou, Noterelenda: Altales Teriadem, Syokaji: 상업 고도 Saŋʼub Godo), is a country in eastern Atlantian Oceania. It is a unitary state well-known for its unusual economic system, capitalizm.

History

The Unified Capitalizt States were created in 0 CE, when a number of citizens of Commerce Heights became unhappy with the current government, led by Sharkey Carlin. The States declared their independence from the Überkapitaliztrepublik on 18 May 0 CE, led by Matthew Yates, and claimed to be the sole legitimate government of Commerce Heights. Several small engagements took place during the revolution, the most deadly of which was a bombing of the Aeropag Tribune building in Aeropag, the headquarters of the Unified Capitalizt States. The revolution ended peacefully in 2 CE, when Jack Dalton, who secretly supported the revolution, was elected as prime minister of the Überkapitaliztrepublik and disbanded the government as his only official act. After Yates’s term as CEO of the UCS ended in 4 CE, Dalton was elected and stayed in office until 10 CE, but his only notable contribution was the annexation of Kaiwu Island in June of 9 CE after the evacuation of Isla de Penguinata from Paripana.

On 9 January 12 CE, under CEO Peter Thornton, a group of private corporations met to form the Capitalizt Defense Alliance (CDA), a military coalition stronger than the armed forces of the Unified Capitalizt States. The next day, a fleet of small TechConGroup spacecraft under CDA command took advantage of an unstable Aquillan government to capture Sirius D, the Aquillan homeworld, for the States. The land, along with land annexed due to the simultaneous collapse of Khiousagahd, became a new semi-autonomous Aquillan state. On 7 March 30 CE, the government of Lontorica similarly collapsed. The land was divided into three regions—one which would become the new Capitalizt state of Lontorika, one which would be split into Bedistani states, and one which would be unowned, but administered by Bedistan. These new states allowed these cultures, along with the Syokaji culture, to survive without nations of their own.

The largest government collapse occurred on 28 September 36 CE, when Tingitanan anarchists successfully invaded Bedistan, capturing all of its land and forcing the Bedistani people to evacuate to Atlantian Oceania. This led to a dispute over the areas of Lontorica under Bedistani administration, which were claimed by both Commerce Heights and Tingitana. The Unified Capitalizt States and CDA both attempted to secure the Lontorican land, but were never successful.

On 22 January 61 CE, after a suggestion from the commander-in-chief of the CDA, John Sheppard, CEO Matthew Sparks ordered all of the Paripanan islands moved from Terranordalis to Atlantian Oceania. The move was completed on 3 February, leaving all of the islands intact. However, the unilateral move angered Tingitana, causing tensions to build over the disputed Lontorican land. On 19 June 62 CE, Sparks was assassinated, the first time a Manhattanite or Capitalizt leader had died in office. The New Manhattan police strongly suspected that the shooting was ordered by Tingitanans, but no evidence was ever found. After an emergency shareholders’ meeting, Branden Stout was elected CEO. Stout immediately confronted Tingitana, ordering referendums held in the disputed regions—which now included Lukeonia, whose government had recently fallen. All of Tarraconesis and Lukeonia voted to join the Unified Capitalizt States. Königeland voted to join the Unified Capitalizt States, but, since Nordwestbedistanie AFR chose to join Tingitana and the other two states decided to resist Tingitana on their own, Königeland was surrounded by the other Lontorican states and Tingitana, and therefore could not join the States. Tingitana attempted to invade Lukeonia in the following month, but failed to reach any major city before being defeated by the CDA.

In late 100 CE, Tingitana made another attempt at invading Lukeonia. A combined force of government-run Capitalizt militias and CDA troops defended the area, but Tingitana gained military control of the area and destroyed the state government in Lukeonia City. However, Tingitanan leader Olo Manuëlo was killed in the invasion, ending any sense of unity the nation had. As a result, Bedistan was able to successfully invade Tingitana in early 101 CE, reclaiming their land in Paripana. The Bedistani government voluntarily allowed Commerce Heights to administer the former Bedistani state of West Jativa, and Lontorikan emperor Timotheus Müller-Bekeschus, through threats of military action, was able to obtain all of former Lontorica not controlled by the Unified Capitalizt States. After the reunification of Jativa, CEO 원강지 (ʼWon Gaŋ-ji) reorganized the nation to make it lest Manhattanite-centric, including renaming several states and dropping Commerce Heights from the nation’s name. He also proposed the construction of a new capital city. In 106 CE, Altera was built on the water north of New Lexington.

Politics

The Unified Capitalizt States act in many ways as a corporation—it issues stock, and shareholders in the government are permitted to vote on certain issues, including a biannual election of a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). It is a unitary state—though it is often mislabeled as a federation, due to the national government’s limited power—with all major decisions being made at the national level. The CEO has direct control of the entire national government, however, the Constitution of the Unified Capitalizt States severly limits the powers of the government by means including a ban on taxation and any regulation of non-violent private transactions.

Foreign relations

The Unified Capitalizt States does not maintain official relations with any sovereign state, but only with the International City of Paripana. However, some nations have established embassies in the Unified Capitalizt States. These embassies have traditionally been built in outlying cities in New Manhattan, though a few of the oldest embassies, including the Bedistani embassy, were built in the capital city of Commerce Heights. With the move of the national government to Altera in 106 CE, it is expected that any new embassies would be built in that city.

Military

The Unified Capitalizt States have no military, but are defended by a number of privately-owned armies, including the Capitalizt Defense Alliance and Capitalizt Coalition for Coöperation in Protection. A number of small, government-run (but privately funded) militias existed, but they were dissolved in 102 CE when the war with Tingitana showed them to be highly ineffective. The CDA and CCCP have a long history of disagreements, and rarely work together in any operation, but their rivalry has never escalated into a military conflict.

Political divisions

At the time of the Capitalizt declaration of independence, the nation was divided into eight states—Chorion, Lower Manhattan, North Neosokojito, Southeast Neosokojito, Southwest Neosokojito, New Anaphase, New Manhattan, and Northern Jativa. In 2 CE, the Capital Territory was formed, which was not considered a state, but a unique territory within the Unified Capitalizt States. When Kaiwu Island was annexed, the island was added to Northern Jativa and the state was renamed the Western Terranordalian Islands. After Aquilla was annexed, the area remained unorganized for some time, however, in 30 CE, the three Syokaji states were merged into a single Neosokojito Sprecial Administrative Region (SAR), and Greater Aquilla SAR and Neulontorika SAR were formed. In 61 CE, when the nation was moved to Atlantian Oceania, the Western Terranordalian Islands were changed to the Atlantian Jativan Islands. The next year, CEO Matthew Sparks initiated a naming reform, changing the names of the non-Manhattanite states to their names in the states’ own langages. Later that year, when CEO Branden Stout annexed Tarraconesis and Lukeonia, two new states were formed, Neue Tarraconesische Spezielle Verwaltungsregion and New Lukeonia Special Administrative Region, bringing the number of states to ten. In late 100 CE, the government of New Lukeonia SAR was destroyed, and in early 101 CE, CEO 원강지 (ʼWon Gaŋ-ji) merged New Manhattan and Lower Manhattan as well as giving shorter names to the non-Manhattanite states. Then, in 106 CE, when the national capital was moved to Altera, he made Commerce Heights the capital of New Manhattan and Altera the Capital Territory.

The current list of states and territories is as follows:

Geography

The land area of the Unified Capitalizt States consists of large portions of western Paleoparipia and Evestigatus, Sonoma Island, Syoko Island, Kaiwu Island, the Jativan Islands, and the entire planet Sirius D. The terrestrial portion of the nation is bordered by Bedistan and Lontorika to the east by land and Communist Heights, Kakin, and Sarzonia to the west by water.

The landscape of the Unified Capitalizt States is extremely varied. Most of New Manhattan became a desert after extreme pollution prior to the Unified Capitalizt States. Large plains stretch across most of Sokojito and western Evestigatus. A large mountain range runs through eastern Sokojito, southwestern Lontorica, and eastern Chorion. The Jativan Islands have a tropical climate. Sirius D has wide variations in climate, but most inhabited areas are temperate. Natural disasters are rare in the terrestrial Unified Capitalizt States, but this leaves most Capitalizts completely unprepared for them, as was shown in 88 CE when a snow storm hit the Jativan Islands, effectively shutting down the city of Aeropag.

Economy

Before the Unified Capitalizt States were formed, the Manhattanite economy was dominated by manufacturing and heavy industry, but in the decades following the Capitalizt Revolution, the financial services and research sectors grew dramatically, and many manufacturing companies were moved to other countries with lower wages (the most notable exception being Capitalizt Consolidated Conglomeration Corporation). The Capitalizt economy is now extremely large and diverse, and according to the Capitalizt NationStates Economic Research Foundation, makes up one-sixteenth of Atlantian Oceania’s gross regional product.

The Capitalizt economy is strongly free market–oriented, with the government prevented from regulating businesses or making macroeconomic adjustments. Before the Unified Capitalizt States were formed, but there were no restrictions on any government interference with the economy, and the government frequently passed laws to regulate the economy—though the government maintaned the pretense that these part of its capitalist system.

The city of Aeropag is considered the center of economic activity in the Unified Capitalizt States, despite its limited population and land area, though Commerce Heights and 소코지토 도시 (Sokojito Dosi) also play a major role. A large amount of silver mining takes place in Chorion, especially near Prontera. Due to the extreme cost of transporting goods between Earth and Sirius D, Sirius D is entirely self-sufficient, and has major commercial centers of its own at Χρυσάεστος (Khrusáestos) and Μεγαλόπολη (Megalópolē).

Demographics

As of 101 CE, there are approximately 6 553 000 000 people in the Unified Capitalizt States, with a population growth rate of 0.65%. 74.3% of Capitalizts are natives of Paripana, of which 32.5% are Manhattanite, 29.8% are Syokaji, 22.3% are Lontorican, 9.8% are Bedistani, and 2.4% are Jativan. Another 12.6% are Aquillan, and the remamining 13.1% are from various other nations, mostly in Atlantian Oceania.

Language

The Unified Capitalizt States have no official languages at a national level, but each state is required by the national government to choose one or more official languages. English (spoken by 58.2% of the population) is recognized by four states (and the Capital Territory, which uses New Manhattan’s official languages), German (29.6%) is recognized by two states, and Greek (14.9%), Syokaji (35.5%), and Noterelenda (8.8%) are each recognized by one state. Other major languages include French (3.6%) and Rejistanian (2.7%). 58.0% of the Capitalizt population speaks at least two languages fluently, and 6.8% speak at least three.

Religion

A large percentage of Capitalizts have no religious affiliation, though this number has declined in the last several decades, down from 98% in 50 CE to 91% in 99 CE. The dominant religion in the Unified Capitalizt States is Margaretism, a faith created by Capitalizts based around Margaret, a deity believed to influence the laws of probability. 5.6% of Capitalizts are adherents to Margaretism, and another 2.3% follow Capitalizm, a religion centered around the worship of an “invisible hand” that guides transactions in a market system. Religion is most prevalent in the Jativa and Lontorika, and is very rare among Manhattanites.

Largest cities

There are many large cities in the Unified Capitalizt States, which have cultural and economic significance. As of 99 CE, there are approximately 75 cities with populations over one million, 24 of which have populations of over ten million. The five most populous cities are:

Name State Population
Commerce Heights New Manhattan 61 305 935
Χρυσάεστος (Khrusáestos) Ακήλα (Akḗla) 36 293 109
소코지토 도시 (Sokojito Dosi) 소코지토 (Sokojito) 28 742 046
유포 (ʼYupo) 소코지토 (Sokojito) 26 496 235
Marustadt Tarraconesis 25 262 893

Sports

Capitalizt organizations actively participate in several sports, most notably football. The largest Capitalizt sports organization is Capitalizt SLANI, a subsidiary of the CHEAT Alliance which manages the Capitalizt national football team and the Capitalizt SLANI League. Recently, the 자본가는 스포츠 연맹을 (Jabonganīn Sīpoçī ʼYūnmāŋʼīl) have become a major competitor to Capitalizt SLANI, establishing their own, smaller, domestic league, the 자스연 리그 (Jasīʼyūn Ligī). 자스연 have expressed an interest in sending their own “national” team to World Cup 30, which has caused significant controversy among World Cup Committee members. The football associations of Schiavonia and Vuam and Isma have already announced that they would refuse to play against the 자스연 team.

The CHEAT Alliance has a long history of building large stadia, which are often criticized as being excessively large. The largest of these stadia is the Sokojito Überdome, built for World Cup 26, which can seat up to 400 552 people. No other stadium in the Unified Capitalizt States has a capacity of over 200 000, but several are larger than 100 000, including CDA National Stadium and JPL Paladin Stadium, which were built by competing companies.
