The Republic of Ustia is a massive, economically powerful nation, notable for its devotion to social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 2.73 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Law & Order, and Defence. The average income tax rate is 100%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.
Inheritance tax has recently been abolished, Max Barry is this year's Miss Ustia, minority children spend hours bussing to schools miles away from home, and citizens are regularly arrested in queues for 'loitering'. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Ustia's national animal is the wardog , which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the credit.
Culture
Ustia's culture is mostly based on German and Irish/Dutch traditions. The majority of the population can trace their background to these ethnicities. Although Most people have German, Irish and Dutch blood alcohol and it is illegal to own any drugs other than prescription medication. As a result of this law, all alchohol and nicotine products have been banned. Gambling is illegan and with the nation's zero-tolerance gun control laws Ustia has become nearly a crime-free nation. During the beginnings of these changes the government was not popular with the general population of Ustia but gradually the administration's approval rate increased as crime-rates plummeted.
Government
Ustia's government is a liberal representative democracy with only to divisions, called "branches." The Executive branch is lead by an elected Prime Minister.
