The Vassfforcian Armed Forces are called Ducal Armed Forces since 1661, because the Treaty of Filibustenia, with which the Kingdom of Dohendor joined the Most Serene Republic, gave the Grand Duke the supreme command of the Armed Forces. However, the Grand Duke may give the direct responsibility over the Armed Forces to the Minister of War.

The Ministry of War
The Vassfforcian Ministry of War is not divided into institutes as every other ministry, but into two councils. These two councils are the War Council (Concejo de Guerra) responsible for any operations and/or troop deployments of the armed forces outside the Vassfforcia. The other council is the National Defense Council (Concejo de Defensa Nacional) which is responsible for the response against any kind of national threat, be it military or natural (a disaster or an epidemic). It is also responsible for the Military Service) and the lighthouse services.
High Command
The War Minister and the Chief Commanders of the Armed Forces are called “High Command” (in contrast to the “Supreme Command” which is the Grand Duke). The present War Minister is Generalísimo Bernardo Reyes. The Head of the Ducal Army is called Generalísimo and commands the Vassfforcian land army and the National Guard. The head of the Navy of Foreign Seas (Armada de Ultramar) and the Coast Guard receives the title of First Admiral. The head of the Ducal Air Force receives the title of Sky Admiral (Almirante del Cielo). The Minister of War is elected by the Grand Duke among this three people and is the Substitute Head of the Armed Forces (as the Constitutional Head of the Armed Forces is the Grand Duke).

Concejo de Defensa Nacional
The National Defense Council is responsible for the defense of the country against any threat, be it military or natural (a disaster or an epidemic). It is composed by the Ministry of War (Ducal Army, Coast Guard and Ducal Air Force and the Homeland Security Minitry (the Gendarmería Nacional and the Heróico Cuerpo de Bomberos).
Answer to Natural Disasters
In case of a natural disaster inland the first responsible forces are the Gendarmería Nacional and the Heróico Cuerpo de Bomberos, but if the disaster surpasses the local capability of answer against the emergency the Ducal Army takes the leadership. They implement the Plan DNII in case the emergency was an earthquake, flood or any other kind of natural disaster. This plan is for civilian protection, evacuation and reconstruction. This plan was last implemented when Hurricane Griel hit the northeastern coast affecting the cities of Puerto Nuevo and Prubdablia. In case the emergency is an epidemic, then it's they implement the Plan DNE. In case the disaster takes place on Vassfforcian territorial waters then its responsibility of the Coast Guard.
The State of Emergency is declared by the Grand Duke when the catastrophe affects more than one state and has surpassed the capabilities of the Ducal Army. When the State of Emergency is declared the Grand Duke assumes the leadership of the efforts to help those in need and control the emergency. Only in this case is that the Most Serene Republic would ask for foreign aid.
Answer to Military Threats
In case there was a military threat the Grand Duke declares a State of War, thus he recovers the leadership over the Armed Forces. Then, he summons the National Defense Council and after the council is summoned, they decide how the country shall be defended. Their resolution is ultimate and unquestionable and must be obeyed immediately by every Vassfforcian and everyone living on Vassfforcian territory. Defense plans exist and are updated every year, but they are all classified for security reasons.
Concejo de Guerra
The War Council is responsible for the defense of the country against military threats and of the projection of the Vassfforcian of power elsewhere. It is composed by the Chief Commanders of the Armed Forces, the Generalísimo from the Ducal Army, Primer Almirante from the Armada de Ultramar and Almirante del Cielo from the Ducal Air Force, and, in case Vassfforcia is threatened it includes the Homeland Security Minitry (the Gendarmería Nacional and the Heróico Cuerpo de Bomberos) as it is actually a Concejo de Defensa Nacional.
