Introduction

The Community of Veitau is a peaceful nation that counts several species among its citizenry. Most notably are humans, chimpanzees, and elephants. Seals, pigs, gorillas, and other species also play major roles in society. Most animals play a role in the government or are represented somehow.

Government

The Veitauan government consists of three branches: legislative, judicial, and executive. The legislative branch, known as the Council, is made up of 250 members. There is one seat for every 5000 citizens and six seats representing other species. Each species elects its caucus democratically amongst its populace, or by consensus. There are no political parties because councillors are elected by their species, which acts as a pseudo-political party. The Council legislates mainly by consensus and compromise. A chief is elected every year to lead the Council and preside over it. The chief also oversees day-to-day business of the government. A chief retains his voting seat in the Council. Terms of Office are one year and there is no term limit. Most councillors step down after a few years or take a break to allow someone else into the Council.

The judicial branch is a single court made up of 12 Elders. It is generally known as "the Elders". They hear civil disputes and act as a balance to the Council by being able to strike down laws that violate the Constitution or are "counter to the values and beliefs of Veitau". It decides cases unanimously to ensure the best decision is made. The oldest two members of each citizen species make up the Elders. They hold their position until death. The oldest member of the Elders presides over it, however it rotates by species, since humans are known to live the longest of all species.

Economy

Veitauans share all resources freely, but do have a capitalistic economy. It is ensured that every citizen has adequate food, water, and shelter. Most property is owned communally. The currency is the credit. All citizens work together to ensur the survival of each other and their nation.

Culture

Veitau has a diverse culture that values its diversity and the harmony of so many species. The main pride of all Veitauans is its football team, which entered its first World Cup, the 35th.

Travel

Travel is restricted to visiting football teams and a quota of guests per year. The amount varies year to year, reflecting the number of applications. An application must be submitted if one wishes to visit Veitau. All belongings must be left at the border, including clothes. With the exception of the football team, Veitauans go about their lives naked. There is no need for hotels because most Veitauans will readily accept guests. They usually provide some money to buy souvenirs, however it is good to exchange money at the border (the only place). Upon departure, guests should buy the hosts a gift, but never money.
