History

The Vertosan Empire is a political union of nations. It was formed in November 2004 after a series of events, that started when the nation known as Vertosa ceased to exist after a nuclear attack from unknown origin. The people fled to a near by archipelago, now known as The Vertosan Islands. When the people returned to the mainland to rebuild their nation, there were those who decided to remain on the islands. The Vertosan Islands was officially recognised as a nation in October 2004.

From here, Vertosan citizens began to colonise the nearby territories. They moved from the Pacific into unchartered waters and began to build nations. The colonies were widespread and no mechanism was in place to defend them from attack. It seemed clear that Vertosa had many enemies who had colluded to destroy Vertosan culture by launching the initial nuclear strike of the State of Vertosa.

The President of Vertosa proposed that an informal alliance should be formed. This way, the nations would be able to share resources and help each other out in times of need. He appealed to other nations to help, but only a few were willing. However, there were a few sovereign nations that were encountering difficulty themselves. They became allies of the Vertosan people and began to work with the new nations. It was from this that the alliance came into being, based on principles of cooperation and teamwork (more details at the bottom of this page).

In the November of 2004, The Sovereign Alliance of the Vertosan Empire was born. Up until early 2005 The Empire was based in the Sovereign Alliance region, but changes in the way that the empire was governed led to the creation of The Vertosan Empire Region. The empire is has dropped the phrase Sovereign Alliance from it's official title and now is refered to as just The Vertosan Empire.

Although many of the nations in the empire reside in The Vertosan Empire Region, the capital nation Vertosa remains located in Pacific. The Pacific region holds great influence over the Empire.

Government

The most senior position in the governing body of the empire is the Overseer. The Overseer chairs the New Year Committee which is the governing body of the empire. Each member nation will send a representative to sit on the New Year Committee, and policy determining the Empire will be formulated there.

The Overseer is appointed by the Confederal Assembly of the State of Vertosa, . The Overseer will coordinate with heads of government of member nations and implement the policy of the Syndicate. The Overseer will act as a ceremonial head of state for member nations but has no direct power over domestic policies.

On 31st December 2004, President AJ Boden of the State of Vertosa was appointed Overseer of the First New Year Committee. Appointments to this position are made every 2 months.

The Principal Nation is the nation where the New Year Committee is based and has a veto on policy.

National Identity

All nations retain their national identity, but take on the Sovereign Flag as their own.

Principles of the Vertosan Empire

• The Vertosan Empire is a voluntary alliance and does not enforce tyranical rule on member nations.

• The Vertosan Empire will fight any cause that it sees as just, as long as they have a vested interest in it. The empire is not, by nature, interventionalist.

• The Vertosan Empire will serve to protect and nurture nations that it estabished relations with without seeking reward or compensation.

Missions

The Empire is always trying to develop good relations with other nations. Nations from the empire will often be dispatched to another region in an attempt to build friendships and informal alliances.

Mission: The goddamn middle of nowhere

• Nation: JK Galbraith

• Date  : November/December 2004

• Type  : Diplomatic

The Free Land of JK Galbraith was assigned to The goddamn middle of nowhere , in an attempt to secure diplomatic relations with the inhabitants there. Contact was made with The Insane Diarist of Temple of Memorial and The Confederacy of Allied Shrimp among others. The mission was deemed a success and JK Galbraith will return to The goddamn middle of nowhere to continue the work started

Mission: The East Pacific

• Nation: Dyspraxia

• Date  : December 2004

• Type  : Diplomatic

In an attempt to build relations with The East Pacific, the Emirate of Dyspraxia was dispatched to that region. The East Pacific was the region that the Confederacy of Vertosa was born into. 1 Infinite Loop helped nurture Vertosa before the nation moved to Pacific. It is hoped that relations can be restored after several months of no contact.

• Type  : Semi-Residential

In order to continue the work started by JK Galbraith in this region, The Vertosan Islands will return to the Sovereign Alliance at their own discretion. The purpose of this mission is to build on the relations started by JK Galbraith and start affiliating nations to the empire. This is not a recruiting mission.

The Vertosan Empire Region

Regional History

The Vertosan Empire region replaced the Sovereign Alliance as official base of operations for the Empire. The region was founded by order of the New Year Committee (See above section 2.2). The region's first Policy Enforcer was The Emirate of Dyspraxia, who took on the role after serving in this position in the Sovereign Alliance.

Government

The region does not at present have a UN delegate. In the absence of a delegate, the New Year Committee appoints a Policy Enforcer to enact legislation passed by the committee. If and when the region gets a UN delegate, the NYC will relinquish authority over regional policy.

• NOTE: The Policy Enforcer is appointed by the New Year Committee, but this does not give the nation any more influence in the governing of The Vertosan Empire (as an alliance).
