Introduction

The Incorporated Sarzonian Navy and the Portland Iron Works had never constructed a warship intended to be a direct competitor to the Doujin-class superdreadnought and were content to either build niche-filling warships such as the Freedom class pocket superdreadnaught or acquire foreign-built warships such as the RSIN-built Europa class. However, PIW was secretly studying the feasibility of designing its own superdreadnaught in light of the then-rumoured passing of the Domestic Defence Appropriations Act, which largely forbids the Incorporated Sarzonian Military from purchasing foreign designs. When they determined that Sarzonia had the resources and the wherewithal to design a true answer to the Doujin, the groundwork for the construction of the ship that would become the Vigilant was underway.

The original rendition of the ship had a smaller aircraft wing and fewer missile launchers than the Doujin, but in the eyes of some observers, the ship that rolled off the ways as the interim-named ISS Vigilant was the most powerful ship available for purchase in its class. Nations such as Democratic Colonies and Scellia were among the first nations to purchase the Vigilant.
