The Weegie Premier Division was the old top division of the Weegie league system, replaced by the Weegie Premiership in the year 2000. It was set up in 1908 by Rigans who had imported the game from their own country. It originally consisted of eight teams, of which the bottom two were automatically relegated each season to The Weegie League, Division 1. In 1961, it was expanded to 10 teams, and players of indigenous Weegie origin were allowed to play in the league for the first time. The WPD was halted three times throught its history due to both international and internal problems. As of the last season, 1999/2000, the teams in the WPD were as follows:
