The Allied States of West Moonah is a nation formed in October 2007, from the remaining peoples of the former United States of LaivNFang. Few more than 23 million people reside in West Moonah, a figure remarkably less than the 1.5 billion people who once occupied LaivNFang. The geographic regional location of the country is within the independant region of Austopia, founded by West Moonah.

About The Government

West Moonah is politically structured as a presidential-unitary republic, with a unicameral parliamentary system of Government. Members are directly elected by the public to the 142-seat House of Representatives which is located at Government House in Gagebrook City. Presidential terms are scheduled to last in majority, no longer than 4 years and a General Election must be held at least once every 5 years. The incumbent Government spends any difference of time in caretaker mode.

The current Caretaker Government of West Moonah is staffed by members of the Liberal party, after the party leader and former LaivNFang President, Kristian S. Hayes recieved overwhelming public support to lead the new nation. At present, all introduced legislation is voted on by the House and invoked with majority approval only. Following the General Election, the candidate (and the party) with the majority popular vote will have the full authority of the Office of the President to pass legislation in the House.

2007 General Election

Election2007.jpg

Acting President Hayes signed the new consitution of the Allied States of West Moonah on Monday, October 15, 2007 and announced a General Election for November 25, 2007, paving the way for almost six weeks of campaigning. Candidates have been announced from 3 major political associations, including Hayes of the Liberal Party, Mr Terrance Snowman of the Labor Party and Dr Scott de Silva of the National-Country Party.

Preferred President polling at the end of the first campaign week.

The first week of the election was dominated by hot issues such as Voluntary Euthanasia, the Death Penalty and Compulsory Democracy. As the above graph details, the Liberal Party and interim President Hayes have enjoyed a positive start to the campaign.

Major news outlets, in just the second week of the election campaign are predicting a landslide victory for the Liberals and President Hayes, after major party figures voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriages. A poll taken by The Austopia Daily News on October 24 revealed 57% of voters are prepared to vote Liberal on a two-party preferred basis, compared to just 39% of voters in support of Labor, making this the biggest lead Hayes and his party have enjoyed thus far in the election campaign.

Also boosting the Government's image is the announcement that Catholic Archbishop Tobias Dredd has been appointed as a Special Spiritual Advisor to the Government. Archbishop Dredd is enjoying "cult" popularity in West Moonah after launching his "Reaching God Through Guilt" program at a recent rock concert.
