Background

Early Years

Wolfgang Hayek is the eldest of three children born to Klara and Thurvold Hayek. Both parents were professors at the University of Portshire, Klara teaching philosophy and Thurvold a leading biochemistry researcher. Wolfgang attended private elementary schools before being enrolled at the Portshire Collegiate Institute, the most academically rigorous secondary school in Hamptonshire. He graduated at age 16 in 1967. Just months after his graduation his father Thurvold, sister Emma (b. 1953) and brother Helmut (b. 1957), were killed in a plane crash. Later he would recall the impact the deaths had on his life, "When they died I realized the fragility of life. If I didn't accomplish my life's goals, no one else would."[1]

Hayek studied at The Royal Academic Institute receiving bachelors’ degrees in political science and history. After a one year break spent volunteering with native Manium tribes, the twenty-one-year-old Wolfgang Hayek attended the Oltremare Institute of International Studies where he received Master's degrees in Foreign Service and International Relations with highest distinction. He enrolled at the University of Portshire School of Government to finish his graduate studies. In only 18 months he completed his doctoral studies and successfully defended his dissertation: International Diplomacy Between Legislative Bodies.[2]
