The idea of a "World Court", that is, a place of arbitration among nations to settle disputes rather than by arms, has had a long and turbulent development within the NS universe itself - which is somewhat ironic, since one of the reasons behind a world court is to promote peace and stability.

There are several examples of different nations or alliances that have, at one time or another, started the concept only to have it later wither away. Usually this happened once a current crisis was dealt with and then a period of calm would ensue. Or usually some nations refuse to recognize the jurisdiction, and therefore refuse to accept any (binding) decision, of a world court over their own sovereignty. Other criticisms of the world court concept have been that the mechanism is too unweildy and that a simplier process - such as an arbitration council - be used.

Various World Court Incarnations

Early beginnings

The earliest World Court had an elaborate system of elections for nine judges. Its first case involved SeOCC suing Xanthal for alleged crimes against humanity, but no ruling was ever delivered because most of the judges never appeared in court to hear the case.

World Court - Vrak

Another early example was when Vrak, along with assistance from several Klatchian member states (including Alcona and Hubris, Dukratus, and Dyelli Beybi) with outside help from Scolopendra and Angelus agreed to host a World Court to stave off a war between Menelmacar and Christofi. The results were inconclusive since Menelmacar, the primary grieved party in this instance, refused to show up. It was rumored the Menelmacari did not show up as part of a strategy to torpedo the court's credibility. Whatever the reason, there were no further cases held by this court.

World Court - NCWC

The New Collateral World Court was an initiative of the nation of Ur an Ass, head of the Ur Trade Pact (UTP). The new court was supported by a lot of the same states (Vrak also a council member of the UTP) after the preceding world court became dysfunctional. The NCWC met with resistance of other nations who, often, did not understand the improvements made to the charter. In the end it, too, faded away as the founding nation became isolationalist and states continued to engage in conflict without paying attention to the court.

World Court - ICEL

The EOTED had their own version of a world court and offered their services in a number of instances. However, some resistance was encountered which perhaps was due to the international profile of the EOTED, now the ICEL, at the time.

International Mediation Council

The International Mediation Council was an effort by Lavenrunz to create an arbitration procedure for states to settle their differencies as an alternative to violence. Unlike earlier world court initiatives, it is purely intergovernmental as the IMC cannot make any binding decisions. (For more information see the main main article.)

International Fair Trial Association

The East Pacific attempted to host a Fair trial association inspired by the Kangaroo trial of 1 Infinite Loop in the region Gorolandia. the Idea has been lightly persued recently. and services still exist should an outside region wish to bring someone to trial in the EP.

Congress of Strasbourg

The Congress of Strasbourg region has started its own mediation system in september 2004 that seeks to mediate between nations and regions.
