Xikuangese is actually a language group, the dialect commonly referred to as Xikuangese, and the one studied by foreign students of the language, being the one spoken in the populous Lhai region and generally understood throughout the nation. Many dialects related to this one are spoken throughout Xikuang, as well as a number of dialects, concentrated in the Western extremes of the country, whose provenance is indeterminable.

Xikuangese is usually written using a proprietary spelling convention in the Tibetan alphabet.
