Overview

The Commonwealth of Xixan, located on a tiny island in the Government region, is an economically powerful nation, remarkable for its complete absence of social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of over 10 million are either ruled by a small, efficient government or a conglomerate of multinational corporations; it's difficult to tell which.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded individuals devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Equality and Social Welfare receiving almost no funds by comparison. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Gambling, Arms Manufacturing, and Basket Weaving industries.

It is illegal to own a mobile phone, all alcohol is banned, corporations are either above the law or corrupting it, families are only permitted to have two children, the roads are notorious throughout the region for their peril, public loudspeakers constantly tell citizens they are "happy people", and pharmacies close down as medicinal drugs are sold freely by the government. Crime is a problem. Xixan's national animal is the coyote, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the dollar.

Xixan's name

The name Xixan is believed to come from the Reve word xixaniyana, which means "island". In 1547, maps began referring to the island as Xixaniyana which was later shortened to the current term of Xixan, as is used today.

Government

Xixan is run by a government elected by representatives. These representatives voice the interest of the most prominent corporations in the nation along with the interests of those municipalities of 250 thousand citizens and above.

The parliament, located in the capital of Wehttam, as of January 1, 2006 was comprised of 14 seats including that of the president. Elections are held once every year. It should be noted that more democratic elections are held at the municipal level every 3 years. Municipal elections are held on June 1st across the nation with the next set of elections to take place June 1, 2006.

Xixan Weather Service (XWS)

There are numerous government organizations run by the Xixan government however one of the most important is the Xixan Weather Service (XWS). Since Xixan is an island nation it is heavily affected by the weather that blows off the Xixan Sea heading in a northnortheast direction from the southern Polar Ocean (south of the Xixan Sea). XWS issues advisories and warns of any approaching storms that might affect transportation networks on and outside of the nation.
