The zaire is the official currency of Zaire. 100 makuta (singular likuta) equal one zaire. 100 sengi equal one likuta. Due to Zaire's prevailing economic chaos, the zaire is currently worth next to nothing; in fact, some have cynically (but not inaccurately) observed that zaires are not even worth the money they're printed on. On the face of every banknote is the portrait of President Mobutu Sese Seko, who has ruled the country since November 1965. The currency code of the zaire is ZRZ.
